Let's Discuss The Better Blues Guitarist of All Time

By Rick Hart

Any discussion about blues guitarists is bound to be full of argument and disagreement. Dependent on whether a person likes conventional blues played on acoustic guitars, or Chicago blues, or West Coast jump style, or the rockin ' blues of many of today's young blues guitar player, you would get a different answer to the question, 'who is the best blues guitar players?'.

And who's to assert they would be wrong.

The single thing we could probably get any person to agree on is there are many styles of blues guitar. And, overtime, any blues aficionado will develop their own tops and opinions.

So that being said, this list is precisely my own opinion and has no basis in objectivity. Now I am not a blues beginner. I have been playing the guitar for over years myself and I'm still a part time pro blues musician. So at least my point of view is an informed one.

And part of the issue with picking a "best of" list for blues guitarists is the renown issue. The most popular also played other styles of music. They were at best "part-time" blues guitar players. But many people think of them as blues musicians when in fact they were never. But who cares truly.

OK Let's Get To The Point

First we've got to outline our standards. Here's the rules for my list.

1. They need to be essentially a blues player and play usually blues music. (That leaves Eric Clapton out).

2. They must have great method or at a minimum be very cutting edge in their playing.

3. They've got to be fairly well known and have some amount of renown.

4. You have to be ready to recognize them inside a few notes.

OK let's get to it. Here's my subjective list of the finest blues guitar players ever and why I put them on this list.

1. B.B. King

B.B. Makes the list as number one generally due to his longevity and influence but also his tone and taste. You can identify a B.B. King solo inside the first few notes.

2. Albert King

Albert is at the head of the list as he taught us all what not to play. His cost-effective, spacious style and great tone are his trademark. He gets more out of 5 notes than any other musician.

3. Robert Johnson

Robert Johnson's influence on every other guitar player after him is legendary. There were other great Delta guitarists but he is the one all the others talk of.

4. Stevie Ray Vaughan

SRV burst on the blues scene in the early 1980's. He gave the blues a drop of adrenalin that still hasn't worn out. He helped influence a brand new batch of blues guitarist and you can still hear his playing in them to this day.

5. Freddie King

He introduced the high-energy Texas type of blues to the world and also wrote many extraordinary songs still played to this day.

6. T-Bone Walker

T-Bone likely should be rated higher. His novel style and influence on others is still mythical. Only a few guitar players can match his style and to this day nobody else sounds like him. And as far as showmanship, he taught all of the others who came after.

6. Albert Collins

Another one of my person favorites. Again his sound is unique and the simple power and spaciousness of his playing is something each good blues player aims for.

8. Hubert Sumlin

Hubert was there from the beginning of the Chicago Blues. He played on so many great blues songs that to leave him off would be a travesty.

9. Joe Bonamassa

OK this one might be dubious. He's here often for his technical capability. He can play anything with amazing fluidity and tone. But you could argue he's not strictly a blues guy.

10. Buddy Guy

Very similar to B.B. King, Buddy Guy has earned his stripes thru his longevity. He could be a bit OTT often but who else has been there from the beginning of Chicago Blues and is still playing only the blues.

OK that is my take. Let the controversy begin.

The Success Behind Speech Level Singing Philosophy

By Brett Manners

Speech level singing technique is nothing new but is receiving a lot of attention as of late. Many successful recording artists credit this method for their success. Also called SLS it is used to help one sing in a natural and relaxed manner. Here is how it basically works.

When you sing, nothing is more important than projecting your voice, and you can do this in more than one way. Yet, a lot of voice teaching methods can be very hard on the vocal chords and larynx over a period of time. When you understand the reasoning behind SLS, your voice box will be relaxed as you sing, and this makes the notes flow in a more natural manner.

SLS is much more than relaxing as you sing, as it simplifies the process. You will sing with more relaxation but you first need to understand certain exercises and what they do for you. You also must practice them on a regular basis. When you perform the right exercises it teaches you to isolate you inner larynx muscles away from your outer larynx muscles.

Your voice is a musical instrument just like a piano or guitar, for example. When you play a guitar, you change the length of the strings to make music. The shorter the strings become, the higher pitch they produce. The same can be said for your vocal cords.

When your lungs produce air they vibrate the vocal cords as this air passes over them. Your larynx works to tighten or relax the vocal cords and this affects their length. However, they way that your voice box affects the vocal cords can be forced or natural. Speech level singing teaches the larynx to stay in its natural position, as when you are normally speaking.

Understanding voice bridges is an important part of SLS training. You will learn to keep your voice box from moving to adjust the pitch of your voice. Instead you will allow the inner larynx muscles to change the pitch. However, there are points in pitch where you need to make adjustments when you need high or low notes, and these adjustments are known as bridges.

Voice bridges are the places where your pitch can change dramatically. Your first bridge is perhaps the most important, as this is where many singers use their outer larynx muscles. When you understand that the inner ones can be used for bridges, you will reach high notes without any extra effort. In fact, it can eliminate all of the problems that many singers face with reaching very high notes and having their voices crack or wander off key.

SLS can help you improve the way that you sing by removing a lot of the effort. When you quit struggling you are free to develop a style of singing that is unique to you. There are a lot of excellent online courses on speech level singing, and they are not difficult to find.

Choosing The Right Charleston DJ For Your Party

By Lenore Nealey

A Charleston DJ can turn any event to a livelier occasion with carefully prepared song selections and music mixes. Since music is the life of the party, you have to choose the best and most appropriate person to command your event entertainment. He should be capable to make all guests enjoy the gathering from start to finish.

To choose the best Charleston DJ for your gathering, keep in mind the background and tastes of the guests. If you are planning a black tie affair, it is best to pick out a disc jock that has ample experience in playing oldies. Classical, jazzy, or ballroom entertainment is also preferable as most of the attendees would be dignitaries.

Weddings, birthdays, and other family celebrations usually have a good mix of attendees, the older generation who wish for a peaceful evening and younger generations who have loud party ideas. To compensate for the differences in taste, you can arrange for two sets of amusement. You can also set up for a continuous set, first intended for the older generation and next for the youngsters. A mixed set is also ideal.

For beach parties held in spots like Myrtle Beach, you can go all out for a disco disc jockey that has all the song selections and mixes for younger generation. These parties could go wild with just one song mix from their favorite mixer so be prepared. Keep in mind too that unlike events like weddings and charity functions, beach parties tend to go on forever.

There are events companies that are offering the services of disc jock aside along with the photo and video coverage. By contacting one of these companies, you will already have the photography, photo booth, videography, and disc jockey service in one. You can take advantage of this offer if you are in a budget or just does not want to hassle yourself.

It is also ideal to listen to the requests of your attendees regarding the choice of entertainment they would like to have in the gathering. If you do this, you will not go wrong in your choice. This is also to make sure that your guests will truly enjoy your party.

To further make certain the entertainment and enjoyment of the event goers, have a meeting with the person in charge of the musical planning or talk with the DJ. Make clear to them the preferred types of sound to be played during the gathering. It is also important to hire someone with a good professional reputation to avoid the ruin of your event.

Most entertainers impose a duration for their performances. If your are planning long events, hire more than two groups. It is also advantageous if your Charleston DJ has all the essential instrumentation for their act.
