The History Of Theater Arts

By Minnie Whitley

The vibrancy and the art mixed with its rich cultural heritage made Phoenix a beautiful city. People are downright born artists on this side of Arizona, where public art museums and cultural centers are found. The government strongly supports artists in the city by offering scholarship grants to deserving students who excel in their work. Theater Phoenix is one form of their creative side.

The Phoenix Convention Center Department hosts events that attract both local and international tourists. This has greatly contributed to the economic growth of the city and the state of Arizona as a whole. The department manages daily operations for the top of the line Phoenix Convention Center, Symphony Hall, Orpheum Theatre, Executive Conference Center and the Herberger Theater.

Theater has played an important role in the daily lives of people. Actors and artists believe that it is one form to express their selves. Everyday is treated important, like it would be their last performance. The Herberger Theater is a huge part of the performance arts of the city.

Performances are hosted on a wide open platform, also known as the stage. This takes place in an auditorium, or any other theatrical arenas. A play can be an all in one presentation which combines song, dance, speech, musical accompaniment and gestures. Every platform is decorated extensively to better depict the scene they have to portray.

The history of the word, would take you to ancient Greece, where the word theatron, is used to describe a place of viewing. It also came from theaomai which means to watch, or to see, or observe. The Modern play of the West that you see today has been greatly influenced by Ancient Greek dramas. Characters and settings, themes, genres and even the technical aspects of theatre were borrowed from old Greek dramas.

There are different types of theater performances which would vary depending on its execution, theme and components use. Drama, is the specific mode of fiction being depicted in a performance. Musical theatre combines music, spoken dialogue and dance. A comedy, on the other hand, uses humor as a means to tell a story. Tragedy refers to a specific blend of drama that has a unique and important role historically in the formation of Western civilization.

Experience Broadway shows, concerts and operas at the newly renovated, historic Orpheum Theater. Located on West Adams Street, it is one of the most historic places in Phoenix. The last remaining example of a theatre palace type of architecture in Phoenix was originally built in 1929. It happens to be the only theatre in the greater Phoenix area listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

It was closed for some time for renovation, and has just been operational in the 1997. Its total seating capacity is around one thousand three sixty people combined in the orchestra and balcony levels. Free tour inside is offered occasionally by a docent.

The performing art department of the city, is considered an important part of its history. It is considered a treasure that the people deeply value. Your emotions can be clearly seen on the way you express yourself. Self expression is one form of art. Being artistic can be hereditary and you are born with that knowledge. But it can also be acquired through time.
