A Quick Guide To Guitar Amplifier Repair

By Richard Martin

Guitar amplifier is essential component of this music instrument. It improves the quality of the music produced by the band. Failure to have it in its best condition you will lower the quality of the music. To ensure that effect of the equipment is felt in the band and add quality to the music, it must be scheduled for regularly maintenance services. On the same, guitar amplifier repair services should also be done by qualified and experienced technicians. Below are some of the maintenance routine tasks that are performed to the equipment to make sure it is working as expected.

Filter caps need periodic replacement. Though they might not be working quite fine for a long time, they will be depleting on the low end and compromising tone solidity. When these caps are not replaced in time, they eventually fail at any moment which can be very embarrassing. Big caps are the most vulnerable and need replacement when they are not more than three years old. Similarly, small caps on the preamp section need to be checked to determine their state.

Tube sockets must be tightened all the time. As you continually use the amplifier, the tube sockets loosen up over some time and start causing your amplifier to produce hissing and sizzling sounds. To curb this, you can either hire a technician to tighten them or do it for yourself by keenly using screwdrivers. Kindly take care because there is high voltage present which can make you encounter electric shock inadvertently.

The scratchy pot should be kept in clean at all time. When it is cloaked with dirt, it can make your amplifier to go silent abruptly. Some dust, cobwebs, dodgy wires and insect carcasses get stuck in the pot and it is imperative to wash it with a squirt cleaner on frequent basis.

Moreover, you should tighten all the bolts and screws holding the power transformer, back panel on the cabinet, the feet or glides, as well as the mounts of the chassis. If these bolts and screws become loose, the back panel will be vibrating sympathetically as the music goes on hence compromising the quality of the tone. You can get a toolkit to aide you in tightening of the bolts and screws.

Furthermore, hire a technician who is qualified and experienced to come and examine resistors in the amplifier. The technician is able to determine the suitability of the resistors and if necessary he/she will advise you to get new ones and replace the faulty ones.

At the power stage, you have very large and resilient resistors. You need to check them regularly and replace them if it is necessary. This is because at this stage, there is very high voltage and power present which normally messes up with the resistors. The task of replacing the faulty resistors must be carried out by experienced technician to ensure that they are done correctly with the appropriate ratings to avoid short circuiting the whole amplifier.

Capacitors on the tone circuit and coupling should also be checked occasionally. This is because they can become faulty in the event of power surge. This exercise must be carried out by qualified technician to prevent further damage.
