The Way Indian Cinema Affects Lives Of Indian Masses

By Peter May

Cinema is said to reflect society but it itself is very influential and has deep impact on the minds of the audience. We follow movies ardently and even carry them into our lives making use of services like Bollywood mobile sites and widgets on our cell phones. Consciously or unconsciously, there are a lot of aspects of a movie that we extract and include in our everyday life.

Because their admired Bollywood actor is the ambassador for a firm, people buy various products made by that firm. And this is not the only way in which Bollywood influence us. We also enjoy imitating the look adopted in the movies by the popular stars. And these are just a few of the many visible or invisible influences that movies have on our society.

Films such as Babul that deals with social issue of widow-remarriage and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham that emphasizes Indian social ethos of respecting elders, give credibility to the view that Bollywood is not only about fun. Rang De Basanti addressed the very sticky and political problem of MIG crashes that was conveniently sidelined. Only the movie made the country rise up and ask for information.

Many movies from the new directors such as Prakash Mehra and Madhur Bhandarkar lack big budgets but they challenge people to review the world around them. They not just force us to rethink the norms but also make us aware of our rights and obligations, which generally stay unnoticed, despite government awareness campaigns. Some movies such as Corporate, Gulaal and Rann even bring light to various social and political issues and act as instruments for public opinion.

The new age Hindi movies have more arduously started experimenting with new topics that are closer to our society. So, if your son returns after watching 3 Idiots and has decided that he does not wish to be an engineer anymore, you will understand how this age of Bollywood mobile is getting into your life for real.
