Watch Vampire Diaries Episodes Streaming

By Serafina Woniak

This TV Shows, Vampire Diaries, based on the novels by L. J. Smith, chronicle not one, but two love triangles among a complex cast of mysterious and riveting characters. Watching the hit television series the Vampire Diaries on the CW Network is like being hurled into a modern world rampant with ancient mysteries and supernatural secrets. The story revolves around the town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, hometown of vampire brother duo Stefan and Damon Salvatore whose mutual obsession for head strong and independent hero Elena Gilbert is the catalyst for erupting chaos and tension filled turmoil that affects nearly every family in residence.

I read Twilight before it was a movie, then read New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn in a mad reading binge before I'd seen a single preview of the New Moon film. When it comes to The Vampire Diaries, though, I dove into watching the TV series while barely aware of L. J. Smith's books.

When Katherine Pierce returns from the tomb dead set on vengeance the evening of the towns Founder's Day festival, chaos ensues. Losing all hope after the passing of Anna, his beloved vampire friend, Elena's little brother Jeremy (played by Steven R. McQueen), troubled and lost since the passing of their parents, tragically takes an overdose of pills. Friends Matt, Caroline and Tyler were in a drastic car crash that night as well, leaving Caroline in critical condition in the hospital, and the desperate townspeople are forced to start choosing sides as the ongoing battle between good and evil in aptly named Mystic Falls builds to the boiling point.

In an unexpected twist the brothers fall in with vampire hunter Alaric (actor Matt Davis), whose wife Isobel was earlier transformed by Damon into a vampire too. Elena is in love with Stefan, and Damon intends to have her for himself; filled with dark vibes, disturbing undertones and forbidden love, the show is undeniably gripping. The Vampire Diaries get better and more riveting with every episode and appeals to a large demographic that has jumped cultural and social boundaries, attracting not just teens, but college students and some baby boomers who have grown to love the genre as well.

The character of Meredith didn't even make it onto the screen. The biggest difference, though, has to be in Stefan and Damon Salvatore. On TV, they were born and raised in Mystic Falls and became vampires in the Civil War era. Perhaps this was simply a bit of True Blood rivalry, though. In the books, the Salvatores are from Italy and much, much older. The acquired their supernatural powers during the Renaissance.
