Learning About Different Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Atlanta Styles

By Lila Barry

Martial arts has been around for many centuries. Brazilian jiu iitsu is a form of fighting with a focus on ground fighting between opponents. It is unique from other martial arts sports because students learn fighting from their backs. There are many mixed martial arts people who train in brazilian jiu jitsu Atlanta, since it has very effective techniques.

This style of fighting was created four hundred years ago in India. It was developed by Buddhist monks that were mainly peaceful but were often attacked for spreading their religion. They created it so that they could defend themselves against attackers. This style of fighting involved grappling to subdue opponents without the need for killing them. It eventually spread to places like Japan where people further developed the art form.

Modern fighting today is attributed to the family of a man called Gastao Gracie who lived in Brazil. This family learned many fighting techniques from a Judo master called Mitsuyo Maeda. Eventually, one of the boys of the family, named Helio Gracie, developed judo into a style that suited him more, since it focused mainly on brute force, and because Helio was smaller than the other boys, he felt disadvantaged.

Helio refined judo techniques into a fighting style that allows one to fight on their back from the ground. This is how Brazilian Jiu Jitsu developed. It also teaches students how to carry out takedowns, defenses, and submissions. A submission is when you hold an opponent in a way that cuts off their air supply, such as a choke, or manipulate certain joints, such as the arms, to make them give in.

Many fighters who train this way prefer fighting from the guard position. In this maneuver, the legs are wrapped around your opponent in order to decrease movement. This is done in order to defeat the opponent or escape them using a series of side controls movements. The mount position is also effective. This involves a combatant sitting on the ribs or chest of their opponent.

Royce Gracie was very influential in making the sport mainstream. He competed in various Ultimate Fighting Championship tournaments and his success became well-known in 1993 when he won the inaugural prize in the UFC. Though only 170-pounds, he was able to defeat opponents much larger then he was using techniques taught by his father.

Like most martial arts today, this sport has various belts that are granted to its students. Everyone begins with the white belt, and then moves up to a blue belt. They can then achieve a purple belt, once they have trained for two to three years. A brown belt typically takes five years of training for students. Lastly, the black belt, which is the highest belt of all, can be won, if the student has the skills.

If you are studying this fighting art, not only do you learn discipline, but you can improve your overall health as well. This is because brazilian jiu jitsu Atlanta has long been used as exercise to strengthen ones arms, legs or back. It can help increase cardiovascular activity for those who want to lead an active lifestyle.
