The Composition And Description Of Film Crew Jobs

By Sally Delacruz

The film production process is very long. It entails many people. Many of the film crew jobs, therefore, are available in very many companies. The crew is different from the cast. The cast is composed of people who stand before the camera for the reason of enacting actions in the plot a movie. In audio films, they give out their voices. A producer is not categorized under members of this team; mostly, they own production companies or the intellectual rights of those productions.

Crews are composed of many departments that perform different jobs. The job description of each of these departments has been evolving with the passage of time. What used to be done a decade ago by one member of a department is not done today by somebody in the same position.

In making motion images, three complementary phases are involved. These are the; before production, principal photo shooting and after production phases. Any position on the crew is linked to any of these three parts. Distinctions are also made between below the line crew; producers, directors and producers, and the above the line crew; the entire technical crew.

A director in filming is not often regarded as a member of the departments in production. His/her core duties include overseeing the chronological flow of events in the plot. He/she issues instructions and arranges actors in the setting. In addition, his responsibilities entail choosing settings that are appropriate for all the scenes. He instructs camera people where to place their devices, and regulates the quantity of light required in each scene.

Another important element in filming is production. Most people do not consider it a department on its own. They always consider it a series of responsibilities. This area is made up a producer, an executive producer, a manager of production, producing coordinators and their deputies, some assistant directors, accountants and location managers. All these people compose the front office.

The production office is made up of line producers and the production assistant. The line producer is in charge of liaising with their studio and the manager of production who also manages the budget of producing the movie. His job title alludes to the fact that he is available and in charge of lining up materials needed. Production assistants, on the other hand, are individuals whose responsibility is assisting the producing team with general duties.

The department of accounts is equally an important element in filming. Members of this department are responsible for handling all financial affairs. They make sure that all participants get their dues, and every matter involving finances is accomplished as stated in the budget. In Hollywood, only one department handles the financial matters of filming.

Another section of this team is the locations department. The head of this people is called a location manager. He/she is charged with the responsibility of looking for good settings for all scenes. He/she ensures that the settings are well prepared for actions. Junior members in this sector include the location scout, deputy location manager and location assistant among other members.

There is also somebody assigned continuity duties and supervising the script. He faithfully follows the pictures shot noting down any section that deviates from the intended. He ensures that there is continuity in the flow of the pictures as planned before the real production. Other team members such as the casting director and the director of photography are responsible for choosing actors and managing the lighting and camera departments respectively. There are so many departments in this industry.
