Some Of The Best Scandinavian Prog Rock Bands

Progressive rock is still a very popular form of music despite the fast it has been around for around 40 years. It began in the late 60s with the Beatle's Sargeant Pepper and the early psychedelic rock of Pink Floyd. These days, fans of the genre should check out Scandinavian prog rock. There are many excellent bands from the continent, especially in Finland, Sweden and Norway.

Beardfish are a progressive rock band from Sweden that are definitely worth checking out. There music can be compared to Genesis or Yes, but brought into the modern era. The band formed in 2001 and have a few different musicians since them. There first album is called Fran En Plats Du Ej Kan Se and was released in 2003 to critical acclaim.

Another band to check out form Sweden are the Flower Kings. This great band was formed in 199 b the renowned veteran guitar player, Roine Stolt. The group has released 11 albums in their careeer and their music is inspired by blue and jazz. They utilise ployrhythms, vocal harmonies, dynamics and abstract lyrics.

Magic Pie from Norway celebrate 70s sounds and blend it with modern rock music. The group used string melodies, catchy guitar riffs, 70s organ sounds, strong melodies, powerful vocal arrangements and tight bass and drums. There music is both gentle and heavy. They formed in 2005 and have produced three successful albums. Their next album is due in the latter part of 2014.

Apocalyptica is a Finnish progressive rock band from Helsinki that formed in 1993 and are still going strong. Rather than bass and guitars the band consists of three classically trained cellists and a drummer. This makes their music very unique. They started out as a Metallica covers band, but soon began to create their own style of progressive heavy metal on cellos!

Hidria Spacefolk are another awesome band from Finland. They balance folk music with psychedelia perfectly. Not only do they use the standard keyboards, guitar, bass and drums, they also use didgeridoo, flute, violin, mandolin, marimba, vibraphone and sitar to create their spacey rock music.

Kingston wall are another successful band from Finland. There music can be compared to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix. Eastern themes are combined with spacey psychedelic rock and they remain a cult favorite with fans of the genre. They have released three albums, a number of remix albums and a live DVD.

Moon Safari from Sweden have a symphonic instrumental sound that incorporates complex vocal harmonies. These harmonies are an important part of their sound and as well as guitars, bass and drums some of their best songs are performed acapella. They experiment with unusual time signatures too and many of their songs exceed 10 minutes in length. The band won the ninth annual Independent Music Awards Vox Pop vote for their Album "In the Countryside". This band is definitely one to check out if you haven't already.
