Society And The Government Can Benefit From Same Sex Legal Marriage

By Estelle Larsen

The couples in same sex marriage is not the only one benefiting from the legalization but the government can also benefit from this as well. The advantages that the LGBT community will be able to provide is usually overlooked by the government. Certain legalities, religious aspects, and morality are being addressed in the situation.

Providing rights and recognition to same sex couples has no way of infringing the rights of others. Allowing same sex legal marriage is giving and extending the rights that are already being placed on the majority to the minority as well. In short, this is all about protecting the rights of all the people regardless of sexuality.

Massachusetts was the one to legalize marriage for the same sex in 2004. The other states then followed after this. This includes California, Delaware, Maryland, New Hampshire, Minnesota, Maine, Rhode Island, Washington, Vermont, New York, and with also the District of Columbia.

Some states have usually recognized this as a domestic partnership or also known as civil union, but in the federal state, they are not entirely recognized. These are true for the states Hawaii, New Jersey, Illinois, and Colorado. Basically the benefits have a few similarities but they do not offer benefits in the federal state like Social Security and Tax benefits.

Before the United States started legalizing this in some states, Denmark recognized it in 1989. Although Netherlands is the first to actually grant it in 2001. This was then followed by other countries as well including Belgium, Canada, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Portugal, France, Argentina, New Zealand, Brazil, England and Wales, Uruguay, and by 2015 it is expected that Luxembourg would follow as well.

In terms of the benefits towards the community as a whole, the LGBT people has contributed to this in ways regarding social, cultural, financial, vocational, political, and spiritual aspects. The LGBT is a fundamental part of the society for the development and growth of the nation. Taking them away would be a huge loss in the contributions of these people.

Promoting equality may not only just benefit the LGBT but also with other minorities. It promotes non discrimination which is an important aspect in reducing homophobia. Legalizing this would help communicate towards millions of other people across and outside the country that these relationships have equal value, therefore it helps prevent prejudice between intergroup and it also supports cultural diversity.

The negative and harsh impacts from discrimination, conflict, and exclusion done by the government would greatly affect the LGBT and even other minorities as well. It defeats the purpose for the growth of these individuals in order for them to foster physical, psychological, and general well being which is the priority for the development of each person to supposedly benefit the community. These impacts can cause social conflict, ill health, and psychological distress.

Removing these negative impacts can result into a better development of each individual. Having their potential being met where they can focus more on the important aspects for their growth instead of having to battle and fight for basic rights for themselves and enduring the discrimination by the society as well as the exclusion. This can remove the time and resources that are wasted. Sooner or later same sex marriage would be simply named as marriage.
