Basics About Bars In Newport RI

By James Thompson

A bar refers to retail business establishment involved with the serving of alcoholic beverages such as cocktails, liquor, wine, and beer. One can also find non-alcoholic beverages such as soft drinks and mineral water. Crisps, peanuts, and other forms of snack foods may also be found in these establishments. These facilities also go by several other names including tavern, saloon, club, or pub depending on the location. Bars in Newport RI are of clean and of high standards.

Throughout history, reference to public drinking spaces has been done using different names. For example, taverns formed major meeting points in colonial United States. This was so because of the weakness of most institutions at that time. With the advent of the nineteenth century, leisure time was mostly spent in saloons by members of the working class. Today, the term bar is commoner.

Many reasons made the consumption and selling of alcohol to be made illegal in many states during the twentieth century. The prohibition was held for a better part of the initial half of the century. Iceland, the United States, Norway, and Finland are among the countries that enforced the prohibition. Despite the illegalization, these facilities continued to operate illegally. Names like speakeasies, blind pigs, and blind tiger were used to refer to them.

The activities of bars are under the regulation of governments to restrict their activities. In the US, minors cannot enter bars. If the bar also sells food, minor may enter, but the law prohibits them from drinking alcohol. They can only eat food and non-alcoholic drinks. In other jurisdictions, bars are only allowed to be located in certain parts of the city or town.

Alcoholic beverages sold may also be restricted by the law. Some facilities have licenses for selling beer and wine, but do not have licenses for hard liquor. In some jurisdictions, the conduct of patrons is legally the responsibility of bar owners that serve them. The legal liability may cover injury, damage, and deaths caused by intoxication including DUI.

The owner and management of a bar are responsible for what facilities are found inside them. For instance, owners and managements determine the decor, name, lighting, and drink menu. However, clientele is a matter beyond the influence of the owner or management. One criterion that is based upon to classify these facilities is the type of patrons than come. Under these category, major examples are college, biker, cop, singles, sports, neighborhood, and gay bars.

Another categorization of these establishments depends on the type of entertainment that people watch while in them. Major examples include blues, dance, karaoke, salsa, music, topless, sports, and drag bars. A sport bar is one in which there are large screens from which people watch games such as soccer, football, tennis, rugby, basketball, cricket, and volleyball among others.

Different reasons take people to bars. Some go solely to have a drink and return home. Others want to meet new people and socialize. Others go for the fun and enthusiasm of watching games with group of friends they come with.
