You cannot distinguish between margarine and butter in an instant manner as they look very similar. Instead, everyone opted for substitutes other than butter without even realizing what sort of ingredients that substitute product contains and whether it is a healthy option for you or not.

There are so many different brand products available in the market and every one of them is manufactured differently whilst using different types of ingredients. As a consumer, it is your responsibility to read the label and identify all the ingredients and make sure you are not consuming something that could cause harm to you in the long run.

If both type of products are placed in front of you without their original packaging, then it won't be easy to identify butter and its substitute in an instant manner. You would only spot the difference once you taste them because they taste different but just slightly. As compared to margarine, butter has a very creamy taste and rich flavors, whereas the substitute tastes a bit bland and it doesn't have a very creamy thick texture as the butter.

The motivation behind manufacturing margarine instead of butter is because it is more profit generating product. All they are worried about is to make as much money as they can without thinking about anything else.
