The Importance Of A Voice Talent Coach

By Harold Parker

While most often, individuals interested in film and television want to become actors, directors and writers, others desire to become vocal artists. For these individuals, there is more than one way to become involved with projects that require voice talent. For example, an individual can acquire a vocal acting coach, attend classroom or online training.

In most cases, these professionals have attended years of training, especially those hoping to become a vocal coach. For those seeking a coach, it is often advised to check credentials and references before signing a contract or making payments. While most are honest, there are also those whom simply place ads on craigslist and other websites. While these individuals are often happy to provide advice, many are not qualified to do so.

Once having obtained a coach, it is important to listen to any advice provided. In addition to professional coaching, there are also webinars and workshops which can be quite helpful to those staring out in the field. As such, it is also important to know what specific area one is most interested in providing voice over work.

When it comes to voice acting, there are often many different areas of focus. While most artists work in many different areas, others prefer a specific focus. As a result, it is important to understand the difference between different acting styles. For example, when working in the area of commercials, the spotlight is always on the product or service. Whereas, when working in film and television, the artist generally needs to be able to create and portray the voice of a specific character or characters.

When it comes to working in this field, individuals must be adaptable and flexible. For, this type of work is in no way a nine to five job. Rather, it is one in which one must be ready to make revisions on rather short notice. As such, most of these artists remain on call twenty four seven so as to make emergency revisions as requested.

The industry is also a volatile one, especially for those whom are easily offended. For, while there may a number of revisions required during the course of a project, artists can not take the revisions personally or as a reflection of the quality of work. There are often times when scripts are revised, thus needing revision of previous vocal tracks. If a director, writer or project manager does return work based on quality issues, it is important to acknowledge how the work can be made better in the future.

Once the person in charge of approving the work has reviewed the audio file or tape, the artist is then notified as to whether the work needs revision. In this type work, revisions can often include working with the accent, dialogue, tone or other audio aspects. As such, individuals must also be able to understand how the work needs to be revised and by what date.

In most cases, those whom are dedicated to learning, and whom have the funds required to get involved in the business often find success. Although, there are also others whom no matter how hard one might try, are just not a good fit for this type work. In such cases, it is often possible for these individuals to find work in the industry, just not as a vocal artist or coach.
