The Complete Full Short History Of The Viral Video

By Adriana Noton

The history of the viral video production is a long and interesting one. Viral videos are clips that become quickly and extremely popular after being uploaded and shared via internet sites or email. Most people associate them with humor, although the videos can also be serious or educational in nature. The clips have been around basically since the beginning of the internet and can be made by either amateurs or professionals.

The ideas behind a clip have been present ever since the dawn of our society. They began with the spreading of information and news from man to man and technological advancements recently have allowed the data to be shared quicker. First, with the early invention of the ingenious telephone and later, with internet sites and text messaging.

The phenomenon behind this powerful and timeless sharing of information is studied by sociologists and psychologists. The general idea is that beliefs, patterns of behaviors, and information are essentially units of a specific culture and can reproduce themselves in the minds of their hosts. Which means that they can influence the beliefs of others thus perpetuating them.

In the early nineties, viral videos were mostly shared between people using emails. One of the first of these to gain international attention was dubbed the "dancing baby" video, as it featured a small cartoon baby dancing in place, and spent a few months being showcased in everything from television shows to commercials. Other early examples included short films about Santa Claus and humorous clips consisting of poorly translated video games.

Currently, thanks to the web, these videos are able to be shared along and enjoyed significantly faster. The exact reason that one clip becomes more watched than another is not totally understood but the hook utilized to keep a people interested is a huge factor, as is the clip's content itself as well.

A clip can also have a number of relevant and profound impacts on society. One very important way that one can contribute to society is through its impact on local education. For example, a teacher in Melissa, Texas created and then launched a website with the intention being to share educational and training videos with other school teachers. After debuting in 2007, the site not gets over a million hits each week.

The clips have also turned into extremely well known ways for new bands and singers to share their songs. In the past, a group would have had to accomplish this the older way, which was made up of making copies of their records and constantly sending them off to record labels and managers in hopes of procuring interest. Once signed, their manager would have to constantly promote the group's records and music videos for them to get watched. Now, this method is a thing of the past and singers can get new fans just by creating and sharing their clips on the internet. If they're lucky, a singer's video might even turn viral and garner them with even more fame and popularity.

The vids have recently had persuasive effects on politics in America as well. A number of debates in 2008 were exclusively uploaded to popular sharing sites, opening them up to millions of viewers who otherwise wouldn't have seen them.
