A spectacular performance in a flawed, but still great Biography

By Helena Sewartz

Before viewing, The Iron Lady online , I didn't actually understand much about Margaret Thatcher. Alternative than she was the prime minister of England for 11 yrs, she had been a really controversial figure and even is with this day. So I was certainly interested discover the movie and I decided to see the WGA screening.

Now let me start by saying, Meryl Streep embodies Margaret Thatcher. She doesn't only appear like her, but she speaks like her, her facial expressions are spot on. Meryl Streep becomes Margaret Thatcher. I will be amazed if she doesn't win an Oscar for this performance. The supporting cast very good too, Jim Broadbent provides an outstanding performance, everybody is really excellent.

Nonetheless apart from the top notch acting, the film had a fixed imperfections. The story was uninteresting sometimes, the flashback scenes were a bit muddled plus a little confusing. The film felt a little too safe and secure, it tried too much, to not be controversial. Although I don't completely blame the movie itself for that. Margaret Thatcher was such decisive individual, that whichever side the movie picked, it might be criticized by a great deal of adults. I guess the movie eventually attained the objective.

I also liked the movie didn't dwell too much on the politics, but on the character of Margaret Thatcher. We see the human side of The Iron Lady herself, beyond all the partisan politics and rumors, we reach see a very personal and sad side of her. The subplot focusing on Thacther's grief over her husband's death, as the older version battles with hallucinations and an unwillingness to let go of her dear Denis are heartbreaking.

Overall the film was absolutely perfectly completed, but really shy of greatness. Meryl Streep's performance plus the supporting cast, really elevates the movie into a good biopic. Although I wished a little more time was devoted on concentrating on her political lifetime, the film efficiently showed a deep and moving side of the prime minister. Which a great deal of biopics are not able to do. Whatever your view may be on Margaret Thatcher, don't fault the film due to the opinion.
