Barcelona Paintings Can Be Found Off The Beaten Track

By Cathy Mercer

If you're not a fan of soccer or basketball, then a trip to Barcelona might seem a bit of a bore. However, if you're a fan of art then you couldn't be more wrong. The place is a bustling metropolis, as evidenced by the Picasso Museum. However, if you're after more obscure artwork, then finding Barcelona paintings in the side streets of the city is your best bet.

The Palau Dalmases does not have a sign at the entrance but is does have a doorman. One look at the seventeenth century courtyard and the carved staircase and you may feel you have stumbled upon a baroque movie set. The Palau Dalmases has reproduction paintings, candelabras and a bar that serves wine and beer. It's located in La Ribera and is well worth paying a visit if you have a liking for opulent surroundings.

The great thing about going to the more obscure places is that you'll find less people have discovered them. However, when you go to the Esther Arias Gallery you'll wonder why the masses aren't flocking to it. The gallery often showcases work from a guest artist, but mainly it has work from the founder, Esther Arias. She specializes in surreal artwork which some have called dreamlike.

The Museu Frederic Mares, or Museum of Frederic Mares is bizarrely located in a medieval palace right next to a Gothic cathedral. Like many of the more obscure things in the city, the Frederic Mares is overlooked by many tourists. It contains many sculptures of crucifixes, some made out of plain wood. There are wooden Madonnas and many depictions of Christ. The museum has rooms on the upper floors containing objects that were collected by Mares himself.

While it's only natural that some tourists will scout out the famous landmarks, people with a nose for adventure will want to look off the beaten track for hidden gems. One such gem is on the Consell de Cent. This road is where some of the more upmarket galleries are, it's a place where a large budget comes in handy. The art here is of an extremely high caliber.

Artevistas is a place that will cater to almost all budgets. It's an excellent place to pick up work from up and coming talent. Many artists have started out selling from Artevistas before moving on. It might be quite a hard place to locate because it's situated along a passageway off the main roads.

If you have a tendency to avoid walking at all costs then one street, Carrer Enric Granados, will probably be to your liking. It has wall to wall restaurants, bars and art galleries, all within easy reach. Galleries like ADN, Ego and N2 are here, as well as many other places. After a hard day of walking around you can settle back in one of the outdoor eateries and relax the night away.

To see the more obscure Barcelona paintings really is not hard. If you're a fan of experimental or postmodern artwork then you'll relish the chance to turn away from the bustling crowd and make a beeline for places that are often overlooked by the masses. Maybe you'll discover a fresh new talent.
