Ornaments are small decorative items that are either attached to the body or to the clothes. The importance of the jewelry as explained by Phillip Romero is independent from one person to another. This is because different people have different aspect on the issue of wearing these items based on both their cultural and religious beliefs. Without these two institutes the person view on the wearing of ornaments can be based on the personal adornment.

These ornaments are diverse in nature and can include the necklaces, rings, and the earrings. The pattern that is used in the wearing of these ornaments varies greatly in the sex and in the culture. Different cultures have different ornaments worn by specific individuals at a specific time. In most of these cultures the male are however not involved fully in the use of these decorative devices. The percentage of those who use is very small.

Other than the artistic display of the ornaments, they can be used to store value. By the fact that different ornaments are made up of different materials, they poses different financial value. They can be made from gemstone, animal material, shells, and even gold. The types of ornament a person posses can store their value which they can later sell to acquire back their cash.

The purpose of wearing jewelry can involve the artistic display or for beauty. These ornaments are either attached on the body or on the clothes. Those that are used on the body can either be placed naturally like the necklace or they might require some body modification. Modification that is majorly involved includes the body piercing to allow the use of earring and other rings that are embedded to the body.

Some specific ornaments can as well act as a symbolic membership of a person to a certain group. These therefore act as a guide to the culture or the religion that a person embraces. The wearing of these ornaments in addition reveals the royalty of the person to this group. Any person that is looking at them can easily associate them to that specific group.

Most of the western countries use the ring as a symbol of the wedding commitment. During the wedding ceremony the parties that are involved place a ring in the finger of each other to always remind them of this commitment that they have towards each other. Anytime the other member is swayed astray the ring will always assist them in making the right decision for the sake of their marriage. It is therefore the symbol for the covenant that they enter into.

An ornament can symbolically represent the group that one is membership to. This is mostly relevant to most of the religious organizations. The members of the religion are presented with an ornament which can be in the form of a necklace to not only show their religion but also to assist in their religious development in their beliefs. The Roman Catholic Church provides its members with the cross of Jesus Christ which assist them in making prayers to the Supreme Being.

For instance the watches are some of the best example in the functional use. Phillip Romero shows how a person can be able to know what time it is by the aid of these ornaments. They are usually worn at the hand just like the amulets and buckles. The reasons why people use jewelry essentially depend on their belief on the matter and the culture or the religion to which they belong.
