Music therapy is the use of music to ensure the wellbeing of the clients who are suffering from different problems. Every case is unique and requires a different approach, while one genre might suit a person very well, it might not be the best choice for another. It all varies from person to person.

Different aspects and forms of music can be used for the betterment of physical and mental health of people. The different forms of music can be emotional, psychological, enjoyable, spiritual etc. The decision of what kind of music will be used and how, is taken by the therapist after the diagnosis of the condition and the complete study of the person.

Music is of great social help. Apart from being one of the best conversation striker, it is also very essential for setting the tone of a place or occasion. It has many mood uplifting abilities that can always be banked upon.

One of the many uses of music therapy is its use in the treatment of mood disorders in teenagers. It is the most productive age of a human being. The identity formation occurs at this age, and it is important that the teenagers are kept calm and stable so that they turn out to become better products of the society. Music therapy helps in doing the same.

It is of great help to people who have suffered a stroke attack. It is natural for them to feel anxious, pessimistic and helpless about their lives. As their lives have flipped over completely, it is important for them to maintain a balanced state of mind. It is proven that patients who go through music therapy along with the regular treatment are a lot more optimistic and lively than the ones who don't.

Given the mood uplifting properties of music, it is instrumental in the healing of major depressive disorder. Music has the ability to decrease the production of the stress hormone- Cortisol that leads to the improvement of one's depressive condition. Some studies have shown that people suffering from the disorder find it easier to interact and express while they are listening to music.

Children can also use music therapy. Most popularly children are recommended music therapy due to low attention span, behavioural and communication problems. To alter it in a way that the child does not feel like he is being treated, it is recommended that he learns to play an instrument depending on his interests and abilities.

The modern forms of a therapeutic sound project were used after the world wars. People took to song and dance to socialise and keep themselves distracted. It became their stress buster. But the Greek mythology says that Apollo is to be credited for the advent of music therapy because he was the first one to use it to treat mental disorders.
