Annual Elvis Tribute Draws Fans From Near And Far

By Jerri Perry

The public could see an elvis tribute carried out in a variety of ways. Grandmothers who grew up listening to Heartbreak Hotel are turning their grandbabies into a third generation of Elvis fans. Women relate fond memories of attending his concerts. Memorabilia is still big business.

Although the King is generally known as a rock and roll singer, gospel music was his first love. There are complete collections featuring the best of his gospel music. He won three Grammy awards for his gospel recordings.

His first Grammy Award was for Best Sacred Performance, which he won in 1967. He won another in 1972 for Best Inspirational Performance. The third was in 1974 for Best Inspirational Song.

In 1993 a Grammy was awarded posthumously for the double-sided hit record, Hound Dog and Dont Be Cruel. But, perhaps the greatest accolade is made by the scores of fans who gather to visit his grave at Graceland each year on the anniversary of his death.

Each carries a candle and waits in patient silence to file up the walk and stand at his grave in respect. This year on August 16th, they honored the 34th anniversary of his untimely death. He was only 42 years old. Fans from around the world travel to Memphis to honor the date of his death.

Impersonators acknowledge his greatness by entering look-alike contests in which their appearances and voices are judged. The most talented make a living singing in clubs and on stages. There are shows put on in Branson Missouri, Las Vegas, Memphis Tennessee and other locations from one side of the US to the other.

Two music groups are collaborating on a tribute show called From Graceland to the Promised Land. One group sings gospel music and the other is an international tribute singer born in Australia. They perform for audiences who want to learn the history of the Kings gospel music and the traditional songs he sang.

There are numerous contests for musicians who honor his memory. Each year various titles are given including a Spirit of Elvis award presented annually. They imitate to perfection, the voice, the smile and the dance moves that were so scandalous in the fifties and sixties.

A week of festivities, banquets and shows are held in Memphis Tennessee surrounding the date he died. His followers are seen around town wearing white jumpsuits with eagles embroidered on the back and blue suede shoes. Hound dogs are everywhere. His passing is celebrated with reverence.

Every other imitator is wearing a pair of shoes made of blue suede and children carry hound dog stuffed toys. Fans purchase souvenirs to add to their collections. They can find everything from t-shirts to working telephones in the form of pink Cadillac cars. Restaurants offer peanut butter and banana sandwiches, which are reputed to have been a favorite food.

Other elvis tribute shows include Elvis Lives, which has a regular tour schedule and a Festival held in Europe. The crowds of fans that visit Graceland, his mansion in Memphis, are an ongoing tribute to his unsurpassed talent and popularity. His impact on the world is such that he will be remembered and honored a thousand years from now.
