Learning How To Draw Cartoon Characters Is Quite Simple

By Krystal Branch

Though a lot of people would love to know how to draw cartoon characters, they think it is too difficult so don't even bother trying. These are the same people who when they were in their art classes at school just could not manage the subject. They would see their friends being able to draw cartoons, and were extremely jealous of them, because they could not do the same.

However, drawing is not something that you can either do or not do, it is something that can be easily learned. It just needs practice and a bit of dedication. There is nothing magical about it, and after a few hours you will be able to draw simple characters very easily, and before long you will become quite expert at it.

If you take a look at some of the most famous cartoon characters, you will find that they are very simple. The faces of the characters are very basic, and they just have one or two very outstanding features, so in this kind of drawing less is more. There is no need to make them very complicated.

It is very important that you take your time learning the basics of your new hobby. The best way is to take it step-by-step, and create your own strategy when it comes to drawing. Decide what you want to see before you put pencil to paper. Do you want them to have a round face, or a long face. For a round face, start by drawing a circle, and a long face use an oval shape. Approaching your drawings like this will help you achieve great results.

With this in mind, go and look at some well-known cartoons and you will see that the illustrator did base their faces on these geometrical shapes. Follow the same steps when drawing the eyes, ears and mouth. When you have finished drawing the head, go and do the same with the body. In no time at all you will have a sketch of a very basic cartoon character.

Simplicity is the key to success when drawing. You should not over-complicate your initial sketch. If you do you will run into problems, and you will soon become very frustrated with your efforts, and all the enjoyment that you can get from drawing will be lost.

It is only when you have completed the basic sketch, should you start adding any details. If you are unsure about what to add, go and have another look at cartoons drawn by famous artists, and see how they have used simple shapes to highlight individual characteristics. Do not worry about copying other cartoons, as this is just a way to begin developing your own style of drawing.

Using this step-by-step method is the best way of learning how to draw cartoon characters. At the start you will need a lot of patience, but following simple strategies will help you see the character grow quite quickly. Just remember that it is far easier to sketch out the outline first, and when you are happy with the result, then you can start fine tuning the drawing to add the special characteristics to your cartoon.
