A Background On Scandinavian Prog Rock

By Christa Jarvis

Over the years of rock music, one sub genre has been known to have gained a lot of fans due to its complex style. This style is known as progressive rock and was actually created in the United Kingdom and then spread to other regions. Scandinavia especially loved this sub genre and adapted it into what is now known as the style called Scandinavian prog rock.

Now just to give an idea about this kind of genre, it is a type of music that has a very complex and an out of the ordinary beat as well as sound. Now artists who play this type of music will usually be shifting tempos and changing rhythms rather suddenly. This is to build excitement for the listeners and also to give the listeners a little bit of variation with the songs.

Of course this genre became a big hit in the region of Scandinavia which can be located somewhere in the European region. Now the main countries that would make up this region would be Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. Now some of the secondary countries in this region would also include Iceland, Holland, and of course Finland.

Now Denmark was one of the pioneering countries in the Scandinavian region. Probably one of the first bands in this field to surface was Steppeulvene which is a band that uses its native language quite often when making songs. Of course there are more bands that came after this like Blue Sun, Alrune Rod, Ache, and actually many more.

Now a very big name in the industry was the prog band known as Burnin Red Ivanhoe which was created some time in the late sixties. What made them really well known was for their smooth combination of many different genres like rock, jazz, and blues. They were also known to add a lot of sounds from organs as well as violins and trumpets.

Now the Swedish also had their own bands that they could be proud of. Now one thing to take note of is that prog rock did not become that popular among the Swedish unlike around the Dutch. This type of music only became extremely popular in the nineties when many artists and bands emerged from the underground.

Of course bands from Holland are also known for the music that they produce. Now what makes their style unique is that they would often try to fuse the rock sound with the sound that comes from folk music. It is for this reason that melodic tunes and songs with a little bit of tempo shifts and beat changes became the main ingredients for songs of these bands.

So as one can see, the progressive scene in Scandinavia actually started from the sixties but is still going strong today. Now even though the United Kingdom was the pioneer of this type of genre, the Scandinavians took that genre and made it into something better. It is because of this that the Scandinavian progressive scene became extremely popular among music fans and is still growing rapidly.
