The Advantages Of Moving Head Lights

By Nancy Sanders

Many bar rooms and music clubs will have some kind of lighting installed to create an instant eye catching show. These will usually include different colored cans, flashing lights or maybe just a single moveable white spotlight. A far better and more effective way to create a visual display is to add Moving head lights to your equipment and there are many advantages.

A moving head can be purchased in a great many sizes and designs but it is very important to select the correct configuration. They will either be ceiling mounted or can be fixed to a custom metal rack and in some cases are free standing. These lights can work in a couple of ways either through a sound activation sensor or by having an operator to control or program them to their chosen routines.

This model of professional lighting is very versatile and the units are constructed to rotate through 360 degrees and are directed in different paths. Various color options can be selected depending on what kind of bulbs have been fitted. More variations may be obtained by using multiple light units or when connected to a specialist DMX controller.

If you choose to use theses lights using sound activation the beams rotate in time with the beat of the music track. The volume level of the music will affect the direction and spin with the effect seeming random. By linking lights to a DMX unit a technician will be able to program sequences to achieve better effect for that track or for the entire performance.

A degree of manual operation can often be achieved by using one DMX and this is often an advantage when focusing on a performer who will move around while they are performing. A Spotlight effect may be aimed at many different areas of the stage. Many variations in shapes and colors may also be input and will then be beamed out from a unit.

When they have been connected to a DMX box infinite movements may be programmed after some basic instructions on how to operate the system. Company logos and pictures can be projected onto walls and even small sections of relevant text. The nature of the effects will solely depend on the number of light units used and on how many channels your box has on it.

If a professional programmable system is being fitted in your premises it should be noted that some special cables and connecting plugs will also need to be fitted to complete the installation and make everything function. These lighting systems should only be installed by a qualified lighting technician. Some of the cables and plugs are often expensive and you should try to source and buy the best quality that is on the market and within your budget.

All lighting will at some point need routine inspections if it is being used regularly. The lights glass lenses should be kept free from any debris and cleaned and the bulbs should be replaced if they happen to fail. The motors that control the movement of these units should be well maintained and inspected at periodic intervals to ensure efficiency.
