Important Singing Techniques For Aspiring Singers

By Pamela C Smith

Many aspiring singers fail to get noticed because of not using proper singing techniques that can help improve vocal quality greatly. There are many techniques for singing and it can take a long time to fully master each which is why succeeding in a singing career requires patience. Luckily, these techniques are easy to practice and favorable results from each technique can be noticed not long after practicing them.

Some important singing techniques every aspiring singer should know about include:

Relaxation

The singer should always be relaxed when singing. There will be times when tension builds up on the face and the vocal cords and the singer must be trained to loosen up when these situations arise. Tension on nerves may cause the vocal cords to constrict and dry making it difficult to make clear sounds. This in turn causes the voice to come out hoarse and sounding tired.

Proper Posture

Singers should practice proper posture and treat it as one of the basic and most important singing techniques. They should position their head erect and without stiffing. They should straighten their backs without slumping and elevate their chests moderately. Both feet should be squarely and firmly placed on the ground in order to fully support the posture of the body.

Proper Breathing

While in proper posture and the chest elevated, breathing should not be too much to lessen movement on the chest and shoulders. The singer should learn to properly expand the rib section on the chest as well as controlling the flexibility of the abdominal walls and the diaphragm.

Proper Resonance

Resonance is one the basic and most important properties of sound. Resonance is related to sound frequencies which can vary depending on the medium where the sound travels. The sound that emanates from the voice of the singer comes from all throughout his body passing through the muscles, ligaments, bones, and cavities. To create the perfect resonance, the singer should know how to control his muscles in order to produce voices of specific frequencies to improve sound quality. A singer who practices proper singing techniques should let his breath come from the diaphragm and glide through the vocal cords. Singing from the throat can cause strain and may make the singer lose his voice quickly.

Proper Registration

When a singer adjusts himself to prepare for sudden changes in frequencies or pitches in the song he is singing, he changes his vocal quality and this process is known as registration. Inexperienced singers or those who have had no formal training oftentimes experience a change in quality when their voice reaches a certain range while singing. This sudden change in the voice indicates the point exactly between the low chest voice and the high head voice. Singers can improve their singing techniques significantly by training themselves to continuously produce high vocal quality even while transitioning through high and low voice registers.

Proper Diction

Singing is not only about producing wonderful vocal quality, but also about proper diction. The music may be beautiful but when the words can barely be understood, then the whole song does not have any meaning. Proper diction is one of the most important singing techniques because words are integral parts of the music that have to be expressed clearly to tell the statement or the story behind the song.
