Fundamental Information About Australian Labradoodle

By Marissa Velazquez

An Australian labradoodle is a canine that is produced from a crossbreed between 2 or 3 other dogs. The canines crossbred to generate this breed are standard Toy Poodles or Miniatures and the Labrador Retrievers. The name was initially used in 1955, although it remained unpopular till 1988. In 1988, the canine was utilized as an allergen-free guide dog.

The breeding was first done in Victoria, Australia by a breeder called Wally Conron. The aim of this breeder was to get a blend of the trainability and gentleness of Labrador and the low-shedding coat of Poodle, which would suit people with fur and dander allergies. A puppy named Sultan was among the litter of puppies produced from this experiment. Sultan proved to have all the qualities the experiment was intended for and was therefore used as a guide dog for some lady.

Labradoodle comes in 3 major sizes. The size mainly relies on the size of Poodle used for crossbreeding in the first-generation. The 3 sizes are miniature, standard, and medium. An average miniature has a weight of about 15 to 25 pounds and grows to a height of between 14 to 16 inches. The medium variety is bigger than the miniature one with both males and females weighing 30 to 45 pounds.

The medium size grows to a height of eighteen to twenty inches for males and seventeen to nineteen inches for females. The standard size is the largest of all the sizes. Both males and females weigh between fifty and sixty five pounds. The height is normally twenty one to twenty three inches for females and twenty two to twenty four for males.

With the correct training, labradoodle can make a very good family pet. It accepts and handles everyone in the family as a best friend. When happy, the pet jumps and plays around in joy making it a jovial companion. Under poor training, some show tendencies of unfriendliness. The temperament of the animal is dependent on factors such as socialization, training, and heredity.

When choosing, one should consider a puppy that is average in character. One that does not hide in the corner and does not beat littermates is ideal. Any average puppy will to approach people and allows them to hold and lift them up in their arms. Visiting the mother to study her temperaments can help a lot in choosing a puppy to carry home. If the temperaments of the mother are not pleasing, then it would be advisable to consider other options.

Labradoodles are generally very healthy, although they are susceptible to certain health conditions like other breeds. When purchasing a puppy, health clearances for both parents must be available to prevent future complications. Among the health conditions to seek clearance for comprise of hip dysplasia, allergies, ear infections, elbow dysplasia, epilepsy, eye infections, hypothyroidism, and diabetes mellitus among others.

Australian labradoodle is a nice dog to consider first. It is easy to train and care for and there is a wide range of sources with important information about them. They can also be put to many uses including guide, assistance, and as therapy and family dogs.
