An Understanding Of African Ministries

By Sharron Cantu

Of all the continents in the world, Africa is considered to be the one with the most number of people. The continent itself currently has 54 independent states. Over the years, the continent has gathered a relatively bad reputation due to a number of weighty issues such as the high levels of insecurity mainly resulting from political instability within member states, high unemployment levels, and inequitable economies with very few rich inhabitants and the rest very poor. Besides all that, the presence of African ministries symbolizes them being religious a result of evangelism work on the ground since time immemorial there more than in any other continent.

The two main categories of ministries found in Africa are the religion related and the government based. Both kinds of ministries are different mainly due to their structures of leadership and the kinds of roles they are meant to perform. These organizations in Africa play a significant role in spearheading development in various sectors and thus have their work interdependent on each other.

The two types of ministries differ in a number of ways. These variances are such as leadership structures where a church ministry are led by clergy men while government type are led by elected leaders and while the structure of church allows for direct involvement with the society the government ministry structure is more disconnected from the community. Individually they perform different roles.

Government holy orders play defined roles contained in various legislative acts but lie in executive arms of an administration. The roles played include distribution of resources equitably, supervising development projects, provision of security and quality health services as well as ensuring fairness in service provision. Theirs are pretty defined and standard everywhere.

Church oriented evangelism have diverse roles they assign themselves depending chiefly on what aim the church and its congregation agree on. Commonly this includes acting as the voice of the community by airing their views, linking with external donors, management of aid accorded to locals as well as assisting in development projects in areas they are based. The activities undertaken however must in accordance with the law.

The roles given to denominational based could be grouped into two, either development roles or religious duties. The development roles include being a voice to the community i. E. Airing the various needs of the people, working hand in hand with various organizations to acquire funds and finally to administer them to individuals in form of aid to individuals and self-help groups. The religious roles of this ministry include spreading their religions and converting people into believers, conducting prayers and offering training to new religious leaders.

There also exist a number of bumps towards the fulfillment of ministry work. Some range from political incorporation, cultural barriers, religious fundamentalism, geographical hindrances to mobility and harsh terrains. This hindrances are however manageable.

Despite the trials faced, work done by the ministry is important and the two key players will continue working hand in hand for a better Africa
