How To Choose Cremation Urns

By Tanisha Berg

Cremation of human bodies requires the use of cremation urn for storage purposes. The resultant remains of the combustion process are stored in a container and moved to the place of rest or disposal. The containers used for this function are referred to as cremation urns. It is advisable to do some reading before setting out to buy an urn because the market is overflowing with many designs. The worst part is that each producer claims to manufacture the top of the range products hence lack of knowledge can be really a disservice.

Choosing an urn is not a random activity rather is dependent on several factors. Some of the factors that influence the choice of urns include size, color, resting place, cost, material, design, seller, and customizations. The size of the vessel is important because not all cremains are same in size. Big animals produce more ashes compared to small ones.

Standard urns have a size of 170 to 350 cubic inches while the large ones have a volume of 400 to 500 inches cubed. Small urns can hold as little as one teaspoonful of ash only while big models can accommodate the cremains of two adults. The best way of choosing the size is adding one cubic inch for every pound of flesh to be cremated.

Urns are very rich in color. Buyers have a variety of colors they can pick from. It is considered respectful and good send off to pick the color that was most liked by the dead. Interior theme should influence the color if the item is to be placed inside the house.

The material of the urn plays a major role too. This choice should be made early enough before one starts shopping. The materials can be biodegradable or non-biodegradable. Major materials include marble, ceramic, bronze, plastic, cardboard, cloth, wood, and glass among many others. People who like conserving the environment prefer going for biodegradable materials. The choice of material can also be made to go hand in hand with interior themes. Materials that can be engraved can hold names and other information about the deceased.

Design is the other essential choice one must make. The hundreds of designs available on the market make it very difficult to choose a design if one is not well informed. Design is made up of aspects such as artistic works and shapes. Shapes vary a lot and may at times be made in the form of certain living and non-living things such as stones, balls, and fruits. The shape can therefore be chosen with respect to the desires of the dead. Personal stuff like photos are placed next to the vessel in most cases.

After the completion of memorial and funeral services, the vessel and the ash are taken to their final place of rest. The place of rest may be indoor or outdoor. The location should dictate the material used to construct the urn. The vessels can also be buried underground of in a water body.

The cost depends on various factors most of which are already mentioned above. However major factors that affect price are material, design, and size. Some companies are also generally more expensive than others.
