As the Star Wars story unfolds, the Battle of Endor is a struggle which was not at all likely to be concluded in favor of the Rebels. The Empire had a seemingly unbeatable array of machines and weapons that should have given them the capability to smash any opponent - but, somehow, the Rebels and the Ewoks somehow managed to defeat the forces of the Empire that were arrayed against them, and even managed to destroy the Death Star. LEGO has recently released two different sets - LEGO Battle of Endor, and LEGO Ewok Attack, that give LEGO builders and Star Wars Fans a way to recreate this epic struggle on their bedroom floor.
The plot of Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, completes the Star Wars middle trilogy, with the final battle waged by the Rebels and their Ewok allies against The Empire and the forces of the Dark Side. The battle opens as Emperor Palpatine is watching the construction of the Empire's doomsday weapon, the Death Star, which is being assembled as it orbits above the Forest Moon of the Planet Endor.
When the Rebels found out from their spies that the Emperor would be present on the incomplete Death Star, they began to put together a plan for a major attack. Their spies were able to determine that the defensive systems of the Death Station were not yet operational. The key to success in the battle would be to neutralize the Death Star's defense shield control bunker, which was located on the surface of the moon.
The Rebels and the Ewoks were able to accomplish this through a combination of luck and strategy, managing to overcome the far superior forces they were facing. The keys to winning the battle were capturing one of the AT-ST Walkers, and using it against the Storm Troopers, and a series of clever traps that the Ewoks had set up. As Han Solo piloted the AT-ST against the Storm Troopers, they advanced on the Bunker and Solo, pretending to be an Imperial Pilot, convinced the Imperial Forces that they were needed in the woods to pursue the "retreating" Ewoks. This allowed them to take control of the Bunker, and destroy it.
LEGO has created two complimentary sets that depict the key elements of this important struggle. The larger set of the two, the LEGO Battle of Endor set (LEGO 8038) recreates the Shield Bunker, an AT-ST Walker (with "walking action"), an Ewok Catapult, and two Imperial Speeder Bikes. The smaller of the two sets, the LEGO Ewok Attack (LEGO 7956) creates the Ewok's tree fort, as well as a Speeder Bike.
The Battle of Endor set contains a total of 890 pieces. Included in the set are twelve mini-figures, including two Rebel Commandos, Han Solo, Princess Leia, two Scout Troopers, several Ewoks, Chewbacca, and one Imperial Trooper. The set also includes a number of interesting mechanical features. The AT-ST Walker can be made to "walk", rather than being just a stationary model. The Bunker can be opened to give the user access to the interior. The Blast Doors of the bunker open when a geared mechanism is turned, and the bunker actually has an "explosion feature" so you can simulate damage by an "explosion". The set also creates an Ewok Catapult, which is able to throw a "stone" up to six feet away.
The smaller set of the two, Ewok Attack, has 166 pieces, and although it is a smaller set it still has some really nice elements included with it. It models the Ewoks' Tree fortification, which is constructed on two separate base plates; this means that the structure can be opened up to get access to the gadgets inside. At the top of the tree there is a device that drops out "logs" that can be used to trip the Walkers as they pass by. A catapult is also included, plus a flick-fire missile system that can be fired from the inside of the tree.
When these two sets are put together, the user can re-create all the important features of the Battle of Endor. They make a wonderful gift for the Star Wars fan, and for the serious LEGO builder as well. The sets are an excellent example of the growing level of detail and realism that LEGO is designing into their specialized sets. This in turn creates increased play value for these special sets.
