New And Old Burning Spear Vinals

By Maude Moses

The earliest Burning Spear vinals would be highly prized if they where originals. It is unlikely that you would find any of the first singles such as Door Peep which was released in 69. Several more recordings where release on the Studio One label of Clement Dodd before the original trio met with Jack Ruby in 1975.

Two singles where released which where immediate successes. These where Marcus Garvey (also the name of the subsequent album) and Slavery Days. This hits, and the album featured the Black Disciples. To get wider distribution it was decided to sign with Island Records but there where a lot of people who where unhappy with how some of the songs where re-mastered and speeded up.

Further albums where released on Island Record but the founding member of the group always wanted to have his own label from that point on. By 1976 Winston Rodney wanted to split with the other two founding members, Rupert Wellington and Delroy Hinds. The last two recordings with them where Garvey's Ghost and Man in the Hills.

On his own the first pressing he made was Dry and Heavy. This was followed by his first live album from a concert at the Rainbow Theater in London. It was called Live! and featured Aswad.

They where also on his next album entitled Social Living which came out in a dub version the following year called Dub Living. This was the last recording he would make for the Island label until the early 90's.

His first recording for EMI was quite significant because it was recorded in the Tough Gong studio of Bob Marley who he grew up along side in Jamaica. Many albums have been released since then that have been nominated for Grammy's. Many of these would be available as Burning Spear vinals. burning spear vinals
