Episode Details: An Episode Guide of Get Smart and Streaming Availability

By Ian U. Harrington

The Get Smart (at present shown on TV1 in Australia) is an archetypal American comedy show. It was created by Mel Brooks at its core it was a series that mocks the secret agent genre and is a light-hearted comedy. As a child I remember watching this show and sharing a laugh with the entire family.

The protagonist Maxwell Smart works for an agency called CONTROL, which is a top secret government counter-intelligence agency based in Washington D.C., Virgina. Maxwell commonly finds himself in laughable predicaments; luckily he has a myriad of gadgets up his sleeve to save the day. Some of my favourite gadgets are the shoe phone (a shoe which also converts into a phone and gun), the cone of silence (often satirically futile), the clock handkerchief (for situations when you need to sneeze and know the time all at the same time) and finally a camera hidden in a bowl of soup which takes a sneaky photo of whomever is eating it. Funnily enough some of these devices were actually invented and are available for purchase today.

The main star of Get Smart TV show is Maxwell Smart or Agent 86. Though he's among the best secret agents in the government, he is quite bumbling. Most of the people that he interacts with feel that he stupid and improbable being a competent agent because of his several clumsiness and mistakes. But due to his ability in hand fight and resourcefulness, he is lucky to turn incidents to a global scale.

Get Smart also featured Barbara Feldon (affectionately known as Agent 99), she is Maxwell's partner and her name is never revealed throughout the entire series to the dismay of many fans! And if I were to name her base on her face - I would like to call her Audrey. Together, the two of them investigates threats all over the world, Agent 99 expertise always save the day and Maxwell's dumb luck usually takes them out of sticky situations. A bit of trivia the average viewer doesn't know is that Agent 99 became the first woman on any American sitcom series to keep her job after getting married and having children.

As Agent 86 when Max was promoted to field agent status, Agent 99 expertise perceives that Max enthusiastic approach as troublesome encumbrance. Agent 99 has the second thought to have him as a partner. Max two friends and lab men gave him a peculiar Swiss Army Knife before leaving the headquarters. The special knife includes crossbow and also a flamethrower that throws harpoons when fired. Although he really wanted to become the top agent, the KGB didn't allow him.

KAOS is the agency of the villain - the "international organization of evil" established in Romania. KAOS is the enemy that always has world takeover plots. CONTROL AND KAOS are not acronyms although it's written in capital letters.
