KJV Audio Bible

By Honorary Rabbi Jo

The King James Version (KJV) Bible is considered the most distributed, most read, most requested translation of all time. It is not surprising then that it was the 1st ever recorded in audio format, setting yet another record for the KJV. In April, 2011, the KJV celebrated its 400th Anniversary. The Translation was in fact finished in the winter of 1610, however, was not presented for the public till April of 1611. It would take the world nearly 350 years to master the audio adaptation!

The Earliest Breath of Life of The Word of Life

The KJV Audio Bible many of us respect now owes lots of its popularity to a notable theatrical voice of Alexander Scourby. He has made the Christian audio Bible what it is today. During his existence he taped well over five hundred audiobooks for the blind! The majority of them are still available from the Division for the Blind, of the Library of Congress for the use of the legally blind. Even with his many professional accolades in the performance and stage arena, Alexander referred to his recording of these books for the blind as, "...the one work that really means something to me."

He began producing the Bible during the early 1960's, in cases where recording technology was complicated and wearisome. Yet in spite of what would be regarded 'antique' hardware by twenty-first century specs, he prevailed in this extraordinary work. Many hundreds of hours went into each recording, which Mr. Scourby replicated in multiple translations, not just the King James Version. Other prominent voices have created KJV Audio Bibles; most notably the following, are James Earl Jones, Stephen Johnston, Eric R. Martin, Max McLean, and Charlton Heston. In addition to these, others are on the market, but gauging just by sales results, the most purchased are still the KJV Audio Bible by either Alexander Scourby, or Stephen Johnston..

The Many Formats of Scripture

KJV Audio Bibles may be found in a large number of platforms, from particular books for example, Scenic Wonders book of Proverbs, or the New Testament only, all the way to the entire Bible Book-by-Book. The creation of the iPod has made all the Scripture far more easily accessible than ever before. The complete Word of God can be downloaded onto one single sim card, and played in nearly any iPod-type device. It can actually even be played in a number of car audio systems!
