Famous Abstract Art Paintings Throughout History

By Marisol Guy

Abstract art paintings fill the pages of art books and the walls of famous museums all over the world. This type of art is so fascinating because it has so much subjectivity and charisma. Art fans love to interpret these pieces based on what they see, compared to what others see. These paintings often display odd shapes and bold hues. These are just a few of the most loved, historical abstract masterpieces.

Wassily Kandinsky has the honor of holding the title of pioneer of abstract. One of his most recognizable masterpieces is called Square with Concentric Rings. The piece displays multiple circles within each other, similar to a bulls eye, that are then placed inside of squares. Kandinsky favors the use of bold colors in his paintings, including this one. He is also famous for many other types of art he created.

Pablo Picasso is one the most famous and recognizable artists to date. One of this Spanish artist's most famous works of art is named Violin & Guitar. This piece displays various shades of yellow and blue that are layered to create the illusion of depth and infinite layers. Picasso often changed his style as decades pasted, showing his versatility and talents at their finest.

Another notable Spanish artist is Joan Miro, who is famous for creating a series of three blue paintings. Out of the series, the painting titled Blue II is the most famous. This painting is displayed in the middle of the series and shows Miro's obsession with open spaces. Miro uses mostly solid blue color to define open space, while also using his favorite primary colors as an accent.

Frenchman Robert Delaunay was an artist who was born into an aristocratic family. He turned his focus to art and eventually created one of his most famous masterpieces titled Rhytme Sans Fin. He used the orphic cubism style, that he so often favored, to create this piece. This specific painting shows Delaunay's love of calmer colors and random shapes.

Jackson Pollock was a famous American artist that contributed to many genres of art. He began his career with focusing on the neo-impressionistic style, then later turning his focus to abstracts. One of his most famous masterpieces is called Convergence and was created using his favored drip and splash technique. This painting uses darker colors, such as blacks, tans, and grays, as well as primary colors to add depth to the pieces.

Willem De Kooning is a more recent artist that created well-known abstracts. He began to gain popularity during the post world war two era while painting with a group of colleagues in New York. They created a variation of this genre called abstract expressionism, which can be seen in his famous painting titled In The Sky. This painting displays strokes of yellow, gray, and cream.

Abstract art paintings are such an unique form of artistic expression. They allow for expression to come out in multiple ways, once through the artist's creation and second through the fans interpretation. Although variations among styles have changed throughout history, the concept of versatile subjectivity remains the same.
