How To Install And Adjust A Viola Chin Rest

By Celia Hall

The viola chin rest is used to remove the gap between the chin and neck where the instrument is held. Since no two player has the same measurement, it is important the tool is adjusted correctly so it can rest right. There was a time when the use of the face rest was not considered as necessary. However, it was found to be necessary to allow the player to play the more difficult pieces.

The proper installation of the tool also ensures that there are no disturbances for the player when he starts to use the instrument. To find the right placement, position the instrument as you would when you play. Utilize a mirror to check the location of your mentum on the viola. This determines the design of the chin accessory appropriate for you. It can be with a cup on the middle, to the left, or to the right.

Follow the instruction from the manufacturer that accompanies the tool closely. Place the item on the tail end of the device and tighten the clamps slowly. Stop turning the screw if the piece is snugly in place. Take care not to tighten to hard or the instrument will be damaged.

Test the position of the tool by playing a few notes. Adjust the positioning if you feel discomfort when performing with the instrument. If the tool is causing problems when you perform, determine the problem areas before an adjustment can be made. To do this, apply oil cream and spread it thinly in your chin.

Place the face on the rest and position it just like you would when playing. Hold the position of the face steady while you take away the instrument. Be careful not to disturb the mark made by the oil.

Using the marks as guide, determine the areas on the accessory that needs to be flattened. Slide a whittling knife or any sharp tool on the support with the direction away from your body. Use gloves for this purpose and do it for all the sharp areas of the face support until all the sharp areas are flattened.

Provide padding in the surfaces of the face support that comes in contact with bones of the face and neck. You can utilize a thick washcloth for this purpose. Cut it into several small pieces, the size of which enough to cover the surfaces in contact with facial bones. Attach the improvised padding to the accessory using a rubber band.

If this is not enough and discomfort is still experienced, a moleskin can be used instead of the washcloth to provide the cushion for the facial bones. A moleskin is a type of foam fitted with adhesive on one side. Cut out a piece large sufficient to cover the hard surface before attaching it to the accessory.

Remove the protective covering of the side with adhesive and place it firmly on the surface of the piece. Apply pressure one minute to make certain it will stick. However, if continuous discomfort is still experienced, it is time to replace the viola chin rest with one of various make and design.
