Water Color Artists That Succeed

By Bridgette Conway

Most water color artists use paper, which is designed for this type of painting, but you can also use papyrus or bark papers, which create a nice effect. Using paper like this also keeps costs down. If you think of oils, then you have to go out and get a canvas every time you want to paint something new.

In saying that, if you want to upgrade to something like canvas or wood that is another option to consider. This will all depend on the subject matter and the effect you are trying to create. It is best to experiment and see what works for you. It is also good to try something new once in a while.

There is definitely a notable difference between the grades. With the artists' paints, you will find that there is more pigment than that of the students' water colors. With these types of paints, one simply has to mix more to achieve the appropriate color. The scholastic water colors are also different because of the appearance.

They come in pans and are usually a lot more affordable. These are a lot more convenient because you are able to carry them around and work easily. Once you have got used to this, you could move up to the next level. These colors also don't stain, compared to the other two and this makes them the perfect choice for children and teachers who are starting to teach art classes. There is less mess involved.

When it comes to oil painting, you will find that people are more concerned with textures and creating various brush strokes. This is easier to do with this type of paint. These artists like the fact that you can paint over or take paint off.

The actual paints contain pigments which are natural and organic. They are made of gum, which help to fix the paint to the surface. Manufacturers also add in glycerine and honey in some cases to help with viscosity. There is also a solvent used and this will thin the paint down, however, it evaporates when the paint starts to dry and harden. Obviously, there are many types and grades of paints so they are not all exactly the same.

The reason for the name refers to the facts that this kind of paint is water soluble. In the past nothing else was added, but these days, artists have enjoyed the gum Arabic, glycerine and honey which add a lot of value to the end result. It also makes a lasting impact on the shelf life.

There are many water color artists who have started off not knowing anything and risen through the ranks to become very successful. This is a medium that has been underrated, but if you look at some of the work that artists have proved, you will be amazed at what has been produced. One can say a lot for this type of painting.
