Man (also woman) versus Machine

By Jenn Martinas

Ensemble comedy holds its personal against Transformers

The new comedy Horrible Bosses proved that Transformers does not possess a total lock within the box office. In its launching weekend, Bosses earned just more than $28 million in the box office. This debut could be extraordinary under any conditions, but particularly in light in the stranglehold that Transformers: Dark of the Moon has in your nearby cineplex. In its second week, the most recent installment within the Transformers franchise marketed $47 million worth of tickets, to bring its two-week total to $261 million.

Although completely different in genre and style, these two films currently at the top of the box office share an important characteristic: Both have impressive casts featuring fine actors. Even Transformers, a “machine” movie if ever there was one, benefits from the always-strong work of Shia LaBeouf, plus outstanding performances by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (the English beauty who has modeled for Ralph Lauren, Abercrombie and Fitch, and others) and Tyrese Gibson from the previous Transformers films plus 2 Fast 2 Furious and, early in his career, guest spots on Moesha, Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper, and other television shows).

Horrible Bosses features a very impressive ensemble cast: Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis as the disgruntled workers out to kill their bosses Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, and Kevin Spacey. Look at the resumes of these six superb performers, and you see extensive training and extensive work on both the big screen and small screen as well as, for many of these performers, a great deal of stage work. These are among the industry’s hardest-working actors!
