The Drum Machine: Free Beats Tutorial

By Delroy Wilkins

You simply cannot compare modern drum machines to their counterparts that existed decades ago. This is due to the advanced options and features that they have to offer. Knowing what these features are will help you be better at choosing the right drum machine for you.

The sampler is one of the basic features found on today's drum machine. This feature enables producers to play back tracks the have uploaded onto the machine. Compared to stock audio options available with the drum machine, the sampler gives you more options with regards to music play back. The sampler also increases the drum machines lifespan and durability. Samplers allow you to get sounds from different sources including other producers, existing tracks as well as allowing you to create your own sounds.

Early drum machines could only store drum sounds only. This was due to their limited memory. Modern drum machines on the other hand are now able to store drum sounds as well as sounds from other instruments. The sample chopping feature enables the music producer to take a sample from a song and then chop it down into smaller elements. The small elements can now be placed onto a single pad on the drum machine. This way, you can easily edit and rearrange these parts to create your own unique sounds. A great thing about this feature is that it isn't limited to drum beats only; you can easily chop other audio samples too.

Sequencer: Most drum machines now come with a sequencer. A sequencer is a feature that allows a producer to create all sorts of instruments, both hardware and software, and bring them together to form harmonic sounds. However, this feature is not available for all drum machines especially those that are found within other software because this means that they are part of a bigger sequencing program. Drum machines such as the Native Instrument's Machines have the feature and thus allow you to control and organize other instruments in your studio.

This important feature allows the music producer create beats without necessarily having to record in real time. It's especially beneficial to the producer that doesn't want to produce rhythmic chops when creating their beats. Be sure to invest time and money into a good drum machine to help your beats.
