The Swedish Female Singer Is Unmistakable

By Carmella Watts

Scandinavia has produced many of the finest musicians known today. Norway, Finland, and Sweden have placed themselves on the map for its excellent rock music and culture. Sweden especially has produced some of the finest musical legends, both male and female. Particularly, the Swedish female singer is likely to impress the rest of the world.

Roughly four decades ago disco was the most popular musical genre in the world. The female vocalist in a group called ABBA brought a disco fever to the world. Commercially that group become the most successful in the history of the pop genre. ABBA topped record charts and sold millions of albums between the nineteen seventies and the nineteen eighties and as such Frida Lyngstad was the most successful singer in the world for that period of time.

ABBA is only one instance of exemplary Swedish musicians. Other artists have come, gone, and left their mark on the music scene as well. During the same time period Blue Swede placed number one on the Billboard Hit 100. They a hit in both the British and American charts in the mid nineteen seventies.

In the mid to late nineteen eighties, the all male rock group, Europe, was a considerable influence in the eighties hair band scene. Europe placed number one in the charts of 26 countries across the globe. Having sold approximately twelve million album copies with their first two albums, Europe became the most successful hard rock band of all time.

During the same time period two outstanding women made their mark in the musical world as well. Marie Fredrikkson made up one part of the duo known as Roxette and Neneh Cherry had her own successful hit in the late nineteen eighties. Swedish music didn't slow down, rather in the next two decades it sped up and made even more of an impact.

In the next decade bands like Ace of Base and the Cardigans sold tens of millions of albums globally. Some of the artists of the time include famous men and women. From the female perspective especially, artists like Leila K., Army of Lovers, Emilia Teddybears, and Meja are known world wide for their single hits. All of these artists created a large following, not only in their own country but in many others. Among these women, are some who are not natives of their country. Artist's like Laleh, an Iranian-Swedish vocalist, add a flare of new talent to Scandinavian charts.

Some of today's top Swedish musicians are female groups and vocalists. Included in the top ten is a sister duo in their early twenties called First Aid Kit. The sisters have been making rhythmic folk music since 2007 and have since become very popular. Sophia Somajo is also an admirable artist. She produces and records all of her songs herself and is world recognized for her Chinese techno.

Many of these famous musicians are start-ups that did not come from a musical background. Some, like Lykke Li, were born to musical parents and are familiar with fame and musical success in Sweden. A Swedish female singer must be aware of the opportunities she has and take them as they come.
