Can The Beatles And Lady Gaga Be Compared?

By Jack Wogan

It is not always easy to change the world, but you can look up to those who can and to those who do. The power of art can influence our lives whether it is poetry, sculpture, painting or singing. When artists manage to do things in a better and different way than those before her/him then you get movements like the cubism in the 1900's or the flower power in the early 1960's.

Two important names like Lady Gaga and the Beatles share their common desire to change something and to be spokespeople for the many. Their main mean to do that is by bringing something innovative, by underlining and combining musical influences which weren't used in common music. It is a fact that their music sound great, but the contemporary singers are definitely favored by the guitar effects pedal which can create more interesting sounds nowadays.

The 1960's were a period characterized by the word "revolution". It was a time when changes were needed, when things couldn't continue as they were on the political level , at the level of women rights and in the field of interracial relationships. There was a painful need to love and to be free and happy which violently contradicted the traditional education. The fact that they managed to capture in their songs all these tensions brought the Beatles the fame they enjoyed and the echo they still have.

Fifty years later, on the background of the ongoing battle for equality of women and men, of the controversy of the sexual choice and of the desperate need of individual freedom of expression, Lady Gaga seems to be their very expression. She is the product of our days, telling things in a rather raw manner so as to become heard by shocking its audience. Her manner of drawing attention towards the deepest aspects of reality is the source of her success as it seems that the world thirsted for someone like her.

A comparison could be made between the origin of the two names. The story of the name "Beatles" is rooted in the respect and admiration the members of the band had for Buddy Holly. After going through a few slight modifications it became as we know it today. Drawing her inspiration from the rock band Queen, Lady Gaga's stage name is a tribute to one of its most famous songs.

It is only fair to say that both the band and the singer are phenomena in their own way. The Beatles had a huge impact on the public in their turn mainly because they brought a new music and because their messages were very attractive. In the present Lady Gaga shocks and amazes by everything she does, thus managing to make herself heard. Her power to make people see beyond superficial aspects and her force of expression makes her unexpectedly charming.
