Getting Along With Christian Hip Hop Artists

By Shelly Berger

There have been notable changes in the way we receive gospel music. As the years have gone by, so have we realized so many changes especially in music that is related to Christianity. The way it is composed. Packaged and presented has changed significantly over the years. This must be the main reason why Christian hip hop artists are finding it hard to be accepted.

Some critics of this type of music rake a general look at the whole field and come up with negative comments that refer to almost everybody that is involved. Unknown to them, this is not fair to the musicians that are in it. It is better to judge people individually than to group them and have a general comment. Giving credit where due is better.

And when you look at some of the factors they base onto write off musicians in this genre, you will be forgiven to laugh. You will hear people say that a particular musician is bad because they dress not so well. Surely! There must be more important things to base on your critics of these people than just they way they dress.

Some other people will look at the way they dance in their music and say these people are not real to their faith. What is in a dance anyway? Is there a particular way that one is supposed to dance? Although there are some scenes especially from music videos that may be suggestive, the truth is that not everyone among them does it and there is not standard code when it comes to dancing.

This however, does not mean that musicians who subscribe to this type of music are all perfectly good, no. However, there are so many in the others genres who could be even worse. It therefore is unfair how these ones are treated.

Some people have argued that the places from where these musicians present their music is the reason why they should be written off. They sing along with with secular singers and in places that are not so related to their faith and values. But hey, are they not supposed to convert souls with their music? Are they not therefore supposed to sing to the unconverted so that they may convert?

Time has come when we must learn to give support to these musicians. We have to correct them when needed. But we also have to give credit where deserved.
