Use Of Chroma Keying In Green Screen Process In Movies

By Trevor Weir

Chroma keying may be something that you have heard about but you may not know how it fits in with today's world. The use of chroma keying in green screen process is important in professional photography, film editing as well as photography. So that you can see why it has such importance I have decided to give you a few examples.

Another name for chroma keying is colour keying. The reason for this is that the process is about putting two images together while taking away either a whole or portion of colour so that the picture or frame can be edited.

There are many cases where chroma keying is used in this day and age. You may be aware that a screen is used during weather reports which are why it is able to change as though a large television set were behind the weather reporter; however it is just a blank screen which has the images added later. Another circumstance where this method is used is during films that have both animated characters as well as people.

With this process you are able to put a person into space, under the ocean or on a beach in the middle of the Antarctic by replacing the blue screen with an image of choice.

To make the programming both understandable to those who are applying the pictures or frames as well as the computer. The way this is done is through certain codes. There is a code for each pixel and these can be represented by letters, by numbers or maybe all of them. There are also different codes used for referring to the green screen or whether you are referring to the image in front or behind

By using the green screen and the given references depending on the programmer or programme you are using will depend on the outcome. These codes are also important in replacing green screens with the picture(s) of choice.

As film once used so predominantly in photography is used less and less in favour of digital the green backdrop is used more than the blue one. This is because it gives you a much clearer image allowing better graphics whether the image placement is used in gaming, the latest film or even advertising. If it is necissary for the colour green to be either worn by a person or the image you want to merge the colours will clash, so you do not get the desired result. In this case you should use a blue or red screen.
