Why did music appear? And more than that, why did it become so popular? It was no doubt the result of a necessity. Although we do not eat it, we do not drink it, we can't breathe it and it can't keep us warm, we need it. We need it the same way we need sculpture, literature or paintings. It's one of those human acts of creation that has become such a natural part of our lives that we cannot imagine a world without it. During the last decades a lot of scientists dedicated their time to discovering the way music interacts with plants, animals, our moods and even with our health. But we still have a long way to go.
During the last years a lot of scientists tried to establish how music can influence plants, animals, our moods and even our health. But all these problems still need a lot of time to be solved.
One of the first experiments dedicated to how music can influence the growth and health of plants was the one held at the Colorado College in Denver in the 1970's. The scientists in charge concluded that plants respond to music and even have "preferences". Musical styles such as jazz, classical music or Indian music made the plants grow healthier and larger. They even pointed in the direction of the radio, just like they do with the sun. Hard rock or heavy metal made the plants grew slower. The quantity of music also influenced the evolution of the plants: they responded a lot better to only 3 hours of music everyday than they did to 8 hours. While the result of this experiment made some believe that plants are a lot more sensitive than we imagine, there are a lot of scientists who believe that plants respond rather to vibrations' frequency than to musical types and therefore are not that sensitive.
Animals also respond to music. An experiment made in Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo proved that even carnivores, of all ages, are sensitive to music. Soft slow violin music made the fierce animals to stay still and listen.
Today many scientists encourage us to play music for babies even before they're born, this helping in the apparition of new pathways in the brain. They also say that knowing to play an instrument (like the PRS guitars) can improve our abilities of spatial analysis. But can music heal? That's probably a question we will be able to answer only after we answer to another question: what is the link between our moods and our health state? Until than we can only be sure that music sounds great for our souls and can sometime sooth a broken heart.
