It's not frequently that movies are inspirational for businessmen. Most businessmen do not have the time to sit and watch movies as they are so busy working out the easiest way to run and grow their organisation.
However , from time to time, entrepreneurs need to take a step back and see the wood from the trees.
Here are 6 electrifying movies and a TV series that have motivated me.
Field of Dreams
Field of Dreams with Kevin Costner is all about a land owner who hears a voice enlightening him to develop a baseball arena on his land. Costner faces financial ruin, the loss of his other half and scorn from those around him. The renowned line "Build It and They Will come" has been a motto amongst entrepreneurs.
While creating or building something does not always guarantee any success, the movie highlights the power of a dream and a vision as being critical in any venture.
Jerry McGuire
Jerry McGuire was moved to write a mission statement that would transform a sports marketing agency. So he left to start his own business and fought to find clients happy to follow him, except one. This one client trusted in Jerry and the screamed the legendary "Show Me The Money" line at Jerry. Whilst having a dream and a vision are essential, the object of the business is to service clients and make the money.
Shrink
Kevin Spacey stars in this film about a shrink struggling to deal with his wife's death and battling to help his own clients. Spacey is given a problematic client to work with and he re-discovers the true meaning of why he's here and not to shrink or stop helping folks.
Legend of Bagger Vance
A golfing movie starring Will Smith and Matt Damon about a golfer who has lost his swing. Naturally, the loss of a golf swing is a metaphor for forgetting about what you were once good at. In this day and age, when everybody is trying to learn so many new things, infrequently we have to remember what is it we were really good at in the first place.
The School of Rock
Another improbable source of motivation comes from Jack Black in the School of Rock. He is a bum who acts to be a schoolteacher to pay the rent. He gives all his students an A grade for the semester and then teaches them about his keenness, rock music, as opposed to teaching the uninteresting student curriculum. He finds a part for every one in the class, drummer, guitarist, roadie and even a kid to do the corporate site design. They create a rock group that in turns ignites the real potential in all his students.
And ultimately, Mad Men
Mad Men is a TELEVISION series set in the world of 1960's advertising. Don Draper is a creative genius whose job is to boil communication down to its essential elements. He uses his real life experiences and gut hunches as inspiration for his clients work in contrast to basing things on cold research.
Don does not not sell advertising, Don helps to sell products. He does not see his staff as artists but their purpose is to solve issues for clients.
So there you have it, 6 electrifying movies for those of you in business. Take time out, enjoy and be electrified.
