Tips For Amateur Film Makers

By John Young

Everyone wants to be famous and get rich in Hollywood as part of the film industry. With today's new technology of HD cameras it's never been easier as far as the cost of creating a quality film. Keep in mind every great movie starts with an amazing story. If you have an amazing story it goes down from there once you film it. The end product can never be better than what you start with. There are tons of complications in making a film. Most of the issue you could never imagine until you do one. Filming the movie is the easy part. Finding a great script is the most important. The post production and editing is the toughest part.

When picking a story it is important to pick a story that can be filmed on the budget you have to work with. A trick is to think of your movie as a stage play on video. The fewer locations, actors and props you need the better production value you will end up with. If you have a really tiny budget look for a story that takes place in one location and over a short period of time. Less than a day or one evening works great because you won't need to worry about wardrobe.

A lot of people think that great acting is important to make a great movie. This might not be true. Famous actors are key for getting people to see your movie but if you direct the movie properly you can get a great performance from an average actor. If you allow for enough takes you can cut around poor acting. Obviously you need someone with a certain level of skill. Just keep in mind that a lot of bad acting can be fixed in post. Cut away from poor gestures or hide per vocal delivery with back ground sounds or music. You can even bring your actors back into the studio to re-record their dialogue.

A trick for post production especially on a small budget is to start with cutting together the master shots to make a very rough cut of the film. Then go through on your second edit and add in the mid shots. Keep adding cuts to your edit with closeups and cutaways. Eventually you will have a rough edit completed and you can go back and re-shoot shots that are really bad. Use cutaways to hide bad camera work or acting.

Once you have your rough cut done and re filmed anything that was missing or unusable you can start work on your final edit. One key for a final edit once your edit is locked down is color correcting. This is particularly important with HD video. You match each camera angle to the others so it blends well. Correct lighting and over exposures to make your film look more professional. Probably the most important part of the edit is adding in the sound. You can remix the background noises called folly. An example of this would be someone walking or shutting a door. The second part of sound in post is called looping. What you do is run a segment of video on a loop and re-record the actors delivering their lines to fix any poor audio issues. The final part of post is when you add in the sound track. Music can really enhance the drama in your film think of Jaws or Halloween.

There are a lot of ways to market your movie once it is completed. The first way is to take it to the film festivals and find a producers agent to help sell your movie to a distribution company. If you don't succeed in getting distribution from film festivals you can take your project to the film market which is held every year in Santa Monica. A producers rep can help you with this. The last option is trying to market it directly to netflix or other online providers doing an online marketing campaign and market dvd's through amazon.
