Finding And Collecting Howard Terpning Prints

By Rosa Koch

Collectors who love western art will likely have Howard Terpning prints as part of their collect. The talented artist has been praised as the most popular artist doing Western themes in history. The subjects of his pieces include Native Americans, cowboys and Western landscapes.

The paintings show what the western landscape looked like before it was modernized and shows horses and cowboys riding across the open plains and Native chefs and other Native Americans. One thing that is instantly noticeable about his paintings is how he uses the natural sunlight to highlight his works, as he shows many subjects in the mid-afternoon sun that gives a warm glow and creates dramatic shadows. He uses an earthly color palate, as is expected with this type of art.

Born in 1927 in Illinois, the artist lived a normal mid-western lifestyle and showed an interest in art at an early age. He went to Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and American Academy of Art and then pursued a commercial art career. He produced movie posters and magazine cover illustrations under the direction of Haddon Sundblom, a well-known illustrator.

By the 1970s, he started doing fine art pieces with the subjects of cowboys and Native Americans and the landscape where they lived. He has been given many different awards and praises for his works. His paintings are worth a lot and have sold for well over a million dollars.

Though the price may be out of reach for most people, art collectors can still add a piece of this art to their personal collections. Purchasing a print is a great way to enjoy the art without having to pay out a large sum. A print is a good way to get an exact replica of the original piece and it is likely to be printed on paper or canvas and might even be personally signed by the artist.

A lot of different galleries offer them on printed on textured canvases and framed in professional mats and frames. A lot of prints are numbered personally by the artist which is the case when they have been part of a small run. At times the artist and his manager will decide that only a certain number of copies will be made which will increase the value of the pieces.

Howard Terpning prints give collectors a way to enjoy his works at an affordable price. They are usually printed on textured canvas and are likely to be signed personally by artists, as well as numbered. The pieces show a wide range of western themes, including rugged cowboys and Native Americans.
