Tom Cruise Films Were Eternally Popular

By Steven Sabatini

One of the first of the Tom Cruise movies that comes to mind for most fans is Risky Business, when he played the role of Joel Goodsen. It was amazing and amusing when he held the microphone and danced wildly in his underwear as he sang. This 1983 hit was a movie moment not to be forgotten.

He starred as a pilot in 1986. The movie was Top Gun and he was Lieutenant Pete, Maverick, Mitchel. This film soared to new heights, both literally and figuratively. The views from the pilots seat were absolutely dizzying to watch.

Perhaps his most poignant role was as Charlie Babbit in Rain Man, the hit that came out in 1988. The audience was transported through every possible emotion during his journey with his autistic brother, played by Dustin Hoffman. Together, they created a heart-wrenching relationship. Charlies transformation from jerk to loving brother was laudable.

Then he played a once-naive attorney in the 1993 thriller, The Firm. As Mitch McDeere he graduated from law school, was offered a luxury position with a top law firm and went from eager innocence to jaded shock at what the firm was actually all about. He took a grateful audience through all the highs and lows possible in one short-lived career.

Other roles for Tom Cruise included that of a producer and an executive producer. He produced Without Limits in 1998. In 2002 he was credited as producer for Hitting it Hard. The Others in 2001 and Narc in 2002 credit him as executive producer. He has talents in addition to his acting expertise.

In Far and Away, he plays an Irish immigrant to America. Nicole Kidman, his second wife, plays his love interest. A scene in which he punched a horse in the mouth was funny to some, hated by others. Minority Report is a futuristic science fiction film in which a murderer can be identified prior to committing the murder. Three psychics determine the soon-to-be guilty parties. Cruise plays what is called a PreCrime captain by the name of John Anderton,

On June 15, 2012, another hit was added to the list of Tom Cruise movies. Adam Shankman directed Rock of Ages, in which the now fifty year old Cruise played a rock singer, Stacee Jaxx. He was a popular singer with a band, who gave it all up to donate his time and talents to the charitable task of saving a bar owned by a friend. He is part of a star studded cast in this hit film.
