How To Draw Cartoon Characters Step By Step

By Shanna McNeil

When drawing cartoons, it is always important to follow an outline so that the finished product will be nice. What most professional artists do is that they first draw a diagram on what the shape of the character is and follow it meticulously. So for those who would want to create character as well, here is how to draw cartoon characters step by step.

The problem with most amateur artists these days is that they do not start with the basics. When drawing cartoons, one should always create an outline of his character with lines. This is to allow him to come up with a pose and have the lines as a guide.

When one starts drawing, the head would be the first thing that he would tackle. To start, he must first draw a circle which will serve as the primary outline. Inside the circle, he should draw some lines to indicate where he would put the eyes, mouth, and the nose. Once the outline is done, he can now fill in the details of the head.

The upper body would be the next part to tackle as it is the part directly connected to the head. Before he draws the torso, he should first create a big oblong with small oblongs on the upper corners. This will already make up the whole upper body including the shoulders. Now that he has a guide, he may fill in the details.

To do the arms and hands, one must first roughly sketch a long shape that looks like a sausage for the arms and a small circle for the hands. From there, he can sketch the arms and decide to make it muscular, thin, or fat. Drawing the hands will be a bit difficult because it is the part that needs the most detail. From the circle, he should slowly put fingers on the corners and work his way from there.

To complete the whole drawing, the artist must draw the legs and the lower body. This area will include the abdomen, the crotch, the legs, and the feet. The outline of the abdomen and the crotch is a big circle while the legs would be two long sausages. Once the artist has drawn these shapes, he may now fill in the details so that he can be able to complete his character.

The final step would be to darken some areas and add some small details. The reason for doing this is to make the character look more radiant. However, this is the hardest part because the artist has to understand the basic concepts of light and shadow so that he will know which places should be shaded and which places should not.

So for beginners, this is a short lesson on how to draw cartoon characters step by step. One thing that amateurs should take note of is never to rush a drawing because details might be left out. It is always better to go slowly and very detailed than quickly and messy.
