3 Important Lessons About Movies

By Paul Smeathers

When making a major film, there are always many people behind the camera that are vital for the project's successful completion. While the jobs of directors, cinematographers, set designers, and the like, are central to any film, no movie will even begin to be made without the work of the film executives. Because the film industry is still a business, and an extremely lucrative one, there must always be capable executives for any film project to succeed in the market. Thus, every studio that has become successful has its own strong corps of executives that are in charge of the various crucial business processes of filmmaking.

For the majority of film studios and production companies, the executive structure pretty much mirrors those of other kinds of companies. Just like any other industry, companies in the film industry also have chief executive officers, chief financial officers, and chief operating officers, in addition to various vice president roles and other important positions. Though one would not expect it, a film executive does not necessarily need to know anything at all about the filmmaking process. This is because, from the CEO down to assistant producers, film executives are focused on maintaining a film's finances and making sure it will be profitable.

By far, one of the more important executive roles is that of a film's executive producer. For any film that is given financial backing, there must be an executive producer (who may also be the financier) to oversee its execution and all vital business aspects that are involved. By making sure a film gets completed on schedule and within its allowed budget, the executive producer functions as the main protector of the studio's investment. In the same capacity, the executive producer must also work closely with the film's director to help keep everything running smoothly, especially when unforeseen problems arise. It is likewise up to the executive producer to, as much as possible, keep any creative changes and developments within the vision of the originally approved project.

Frequently, there will be more than one executive producer among the executives of a given film. More and more there have been a number of movie directors simultaneously take on various executive roles for their film projects. Really, all someone needs to be a good film executive is a good mind for business, enough financial resources, and solid connections to various key individuals. Still, an executive may be able to gain better perspective in their management by gaining a better understanding of the positions that directors, actors, and other crew members are in.

People have sought to become a film executive for a wide variety of reasons. Film executives obviously get paid large sums of money, however, a good number of them just enjoy being an essential aspect of some creative process--and especially when they are not great creators themselves. There are countless numbers of resources available on the internet that will provide more information about the filmmaking process and the essential role that executives play in it.
