The Basic Facts Regarding Wilhelmina

By Camille Nicholson

Wilhelmina is from the German language and means protector. It is used as a name for many females, who may also be called Willa, Mina, Wilma or Willy. There are some famous people who have this name, such as supermodel and model agency founder Wilhelmina Cooper.

Cooper was the founder and owner of Wilhelmina Models. She was born in the Netherlands in 1939 and died at age 40. She began modeling with Ford Models and at the peak of her career, started her own agency, named after herself. It was started in New York City in the 1960s. It is still in operation today.

She is most known for her successful modeling in the mid-twentieth century. Throughout her career, she made the cover of 255 magazines. In fact, she holds the record for appearing the most on the cover of Vogue Magazine, the American version. She has been featured 27 times. Cooper was well-loved for her work in the couture era.

She learned a lot about the fashion industry while modeling. This information was employed when she started the agency with husband Bruce Cooper, an executive producer during that time. The company was successful early after its launch and quickly became a leader in the agency, alongside businesses like Ford Models.

The agency played a big part in launching the career of African-American supermodel Naomi Sims. She began her career during the middle of the 1960s but found it hard to find work. With the aid of Cooper, Sims was able to earn money and flourish in her career. In popular culture, actress Faye Dunaway portrayed Cooper in the 1998 film titled Gia. The movie is about the story of model Gia Carangi, who was discovered by Cooper. The American TV show Ugly Betty named its protagonist Wilhelmina Slater, a tribute to Cooper.

Despite her early death, the legacy of Cooper lives on, particularly through her business. The agency has expanded in many respects and has offices located in Los Angeles, Austin, New York and Miami. The business also creates licensing agreements with national and international agencies. The business is considered one of the top talent management agencies. It has a client list that includes fitness, full-figured, children, men and women models. It is also known for artist management, working with entertainers and musicians.

The business is known for helping its clients build and keep brand identities, campaigns, sponsorships, endorsements, marketing opportunities and more. It features multiple different departments. The general areas of work are categorized as: men, kids and teens, fitness, s2, runway, select, women, curve, artist management and fitness.

Wilhelmina is a name that derives from German and is mostly assigned to females. There are approximately half a dozen people with this as a first name that had well-known careers and lifestyles. Among these people, and perhaps one of the most popular, was Wilhelmina Cooper, a famous super model. In addition to her modeling work, Cooper and her husband Bruce started a professional modeling agency in 1967. The company is still thriving today, long after its founder passed away in 1980.
