Taking Advantage Of Arts Effect On Society

By Camille Nicholson

There are no clear answers to the question of whether audiences change their minds about such issues as war, spirituality or nature when they are exposed to artistic works. Experts have debated this issue for many years. Certainly creative folks hope that others will be moved by their paintings, dances, films or television shows. But it is very difficult to quantify arts effect on society.

One thing that seems obvious however is that it is possible to make money by capitalizing on current artistic trends. Many astute folks have become rich by watching popular culture and predicting what consumers will want to buy. To do this successfully, you need to conduct a great deal of research.

The world of fashion is a prime example of how this works. The items that you'll see in top designers' fashion shows tomorrow often resemble the costumes displayed in high-grossing films and top-rated television shows around the world today. The commonalities in design are not a coincidence.

When a big science fiction film comes out, you can expect fashion to adopt a futuristic flair, complete with metallic materials. On the other hand, when the top TV shows are focused on the lives of the upper classes, you are more likely to see stores carrying billowy dresses with high necklines. The profit comes from mass marketing of copies of the original designs, as the cost of buying designer outfits is prohibitive for most people.

The world of cosmetics is affected by pop culture too. Sales soar when earthy eye shadows become the look that everyone wants to copy after the leading lady in a famous film decides to adopt a natural countenance. At the same time, pinks will start to dominate the market for lipsticks.

In addition, dance teachers all over the world have made financial gains as a result of artistic programming. Ballroom competition shows on television have fueled tremendous growth in the numbers of people interested in emulating what they have seen. They are flocking to studios to learn sexy moves, like the rumba and are willing to pay plenty for this knowledge.

The field of addictions is another area where the popular arts have had a measurable impact. In the past, when people had a problem in this area, they hid it because they felt ashamed. But in the last decade, many popular celebrities have come forward to disclose such problems. Their example has led countless others to make similar admissions and to speak candidly about the recovery process. As a result, addiction is now treated as a disease rather than a weakness and there has been a wide proliferation of centers where addicts can recover.

Of course, not everyone is in a position to profit monetarily from arts effect on society. But you have no doubt experienced many personal benefits from witnessing the items produced by artists over the years. If you're like most people, there have been instances where classical music calmed you and helped in dealing with the stress that life throws our way. You may also have been wonder struck by the sheer magnificence of a fabulous sculpture that reinforces our joy in being alive.
