Going Completely Wireless With Home Audio... Is It Possible?

By Dax Braxton

Wireless seems to be the big thing these days. Everyone wants to control all of their different electronics wirelessly if possible and home theater is no different. The only problem is if wireless home theater is really possible. Sure you can control your home theater wirelessly but can you really have wireless speakers? So what exactly is fact and what is fiction.

What Is Possible?

It is currently possible to control your entire home theater experience wirelessly in the since of changing the movie, TV station, volume, which room has sound and so on. Not too long ago multi-room audio required you to go to a panel in wall in order to make changes. It is even possible to now control almost 100% of it through even a smart phone. On top of being able to control your home audio wirelessly there are even several speakers that will run wireless as well so you don't have to run speaker wire all over your home in order to have speakers in different locations but these speakers still require a power source to function which makes then not 100% wire free.

Things That Are Not Possible?

Speakers need power in order to run and normally a speaker can draw the power it needs from the speaker wire. With a wireless speaker the speaker needs power in order to run its wireless sensor as well as to function so 95% of wireless speakers need to be plugged into a wall. The other 5% run on batteries but the problem with that is that they will only last a couple of hours and then need recharging. There are even wireless subwoofers and subwoofer kits that you can but to make your subwoofer wireless but the problem with that is that your subwoofer will still have to have power at all times. A subwoofer needs too much energy to function and because of that will never truly will be able to be wireless.

What Can We Expect In The Future?

One thing that you are sure to see shortly would be speaker with better battery life. Once speakers can go for weeks or even months without needing to be plugged into power to work it will be a whole new world. Also with smart phones getting better and better you can expect to see more audio receiver that are able to be controlled directly from your phone.

The true wireless home theater setup may still be a little ways away but be patient because in the next couple of years you should see some big advances.
