How To Learn Piano

By Andy Penbram

Getting piano lessons or keyboard lessons online is a recent development and viable alternative to normal piano lessons. It is becoming more and more popular and with the rapid development in audio visual technology you can now have your very own virtual teacher in your home to be used at your convenience.

Private Piano Teachers

Going to a private piano teacher has always been the normal way to learn piano until now. Lessons with a piano teacher normally last about an hour and are once every week. Going to a teacher has its advantages and disadvantages, on the plus side you have a real person there to show you if you have any major posture problems or if you are developing bad habits in your playing technique.

Sometimes it can be difficult to schedule but also your personal practice needs to be done before the lesson so you can progress onto higher levels with your teacher. There are quite a few disadvantages too, you are restricted as to what you can learn as most teachers will not let you choose the music or the style you want to play.

Not all teachers will teach you the music that you want to play, some may not teach you how to play by ear, some will not teach you blues, jazz, gospel and classical for example.

So what have online lessons got to offer?

Teaching yourself through a home study course you can advance at your own rhythm, you can go as fast or as slow as time allows you. Flexibility is one of the principle reasons why many people learn piano online. There is no traveling to your teacher's piano studio week in week out and you can take your lessons when ever you feel like it. You are able to set your practice time as you want as you don't have to be ready in time for your next lesson.

Another great benefit of a home study piano method is of course the price difference. Piano lessons usually cost anything from $30 - $100 for an hour. You will have to pay for the lesson every week, and some teachers require you to pay for the whole month and do not issue a refund if you can't get to a lesson.

An online piano course can be downloaded for about $50 and will give you typically the equivalent of about a years worth of lessons if your are just starting out. If you take an online course you never have to be worried about freeing up time for a lesson or about making time to practice. Nor do you have to be concerned about getting stuck on uninspiring lessons that don't interest you. You will be progressing totally at your own pace and moving through the lessons in a comfortable way.

Learning like this puts you totally in control of your learning process. If you happen to get stuck on a rather difficult lesson you can spent time on it, playing it over and over until you get it right and under your fingers. On the other hand, you will find some lessons easier than others and will be able to skip through them rapidly and onto the next ones.

In general, trying to learn piano online can be a great fun way to learn with none of the pressure of scheduled lessons and is ideal for beginners. If needed at a later date when you are more proficient you could consider attending at least a few lessons with a traditional teacher just to make sure you are on the right track and have not picked up any bad habits.
