How To Make Hip-Hop Beats For Sale (Purchase Beats): Inspiration

By Frank Lubsey

Sooner or later as a beat maker, you'll hit a point after making enough beats where your beats will start to sound very similar to each other and you'll eventually get sick of making the same beat over again. When you reach this point, beat making can sometimes start to feel like a chore and you will start to feel uninspired. However, it is quite natural to feel that way and it is really part of the process. Today, we are going to discuss a few ways to stay inspired so that you can continue to grow as a beat maker.

One important thing to remember before diving into the techniques for inspiration is that this frustration you feel is a good thing. Embrace it. If you did not feel frustrated about your beats starting to sound the same, you would have no incentive to change. You would make the same style of beat over and be completely happy. Frustration is an energy that forces you to change and grow, so embrace this energy and the techniques outlined below.

Listen to new music: Music is like food for a beat maker's mind. Whether you realize it or not, when you listen to new music, you are subconsciously learning to new musical ideas which you will play with later. If you aren't listening to new music, you are essentially starving your mind. Also, listen to music beyond your own genre. The greatest producers such as Dr. Dre and Timbaland have sampled from a myriad number of sources such as world music, reggae, and jazz. This is why their sound is so unique. The universe of music is much more than just hip-hop, so have an open mind and listen.

Get new sounds: Sometimes, you reach a point where you've been using the sounds off of your virtual synth or keyboard over and over again and you use them so much, that the sounds themselves become uninspiring. It is at this point where you should start acquiring new sounds. It doesn't have to be a brand new $3000 synthesizer. It can be a budget vst synth or even a vst synth that costs a few hundred dollars. Either case, adding a new batch of sounds to your arsenal will help your sound stay fresh and will keep you motivated and into the music.

Experiment with new effects: Sometimes, by applying effects programs, you can breath life into existing sounds by giving them a different spin. As a result, purchasing new sounds isn't always necessary. Don't be afraid to purchase effects programs like CamelSpace and CamelPhat that can really alter your existing sounds.

The important thing to remember when you reach that wall is to push through! When you reach the other side, you will be a more competent and versatile beat maker. Use a few of these techniques above to help you stay inspired.
